Berry Tramel: Sam Bradford’s return lifts Sooners' spirits
OU-Texas: Sooners will have extra confidence with Bradford at the helm

NORMAN — The Sooners tried to speak carefully. Tried not to besmirch Landry Jones, who ably filled in as the Oklahoma quarterback.

But the truth is unavoidable. Sam Bradford’s return thrilled the Sooners. And Bradford’s return to the OU huddle is almost as valuable as Bradford’s return to the OU pocket.

Texas Week has arrived, and Sooner psyches are in much better shape knowing that Sammy B. will don shoulder pads in Dallas.

"There’s no denying it,” Bob Stoops said. "There’s no getting around it. He gives everybody extra confidence.”

Bradford is a security blanket. He’s like mom’s home cooking. You know what you’re going to get, and you’re going to like it.

Bradford provides a calming influence. Everything seems a little more in place with Bradford back, a little more orderly.

Better yet, Bradford’s walk down the Cotton Bowl ramp will not be a Willis Reed repeat.

Sir Willis limped onto the court in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals and invigorated his Knickerbocker teammates and the Madison Square Garden crowd. But Reed that night scored just four points and played 27 minutes. His contribution was emotional, spiritual if you will.

Anyone who saw Bradford zip the ball against Baylor on Saturday knows his benefit to the Sooners is more than symbolic. But Bradford’s benefit also is more than physical.

"Him being a leader out there, it was good to have Sam back,” said tailback DeMarco Murray. "It was definitely a little extra boost with him being more vocal than Landry.”

Nothing against Jones. Mister Mustache has shown he can do more than throw a spiral and generally in the proper direction. Jones was a solid field general and gives the Sooners hope for the future.

But the streets of Dodge City are safer when Marshal Dillon strolls its boardwalks, and OU ballplayers are more comfortable when Sam is slingin’.

"I was excited,” receiver Brandon Caleb said of Bradford’s return. "He’s been rehabbing a lot and working hard, so when he was out there, I was just excited.”

Same with everyone in crimson. Bradford restored to them a bounce in their step and a lift to their spirits, which alone can’t beat Texas, but it’s impossible without them.

Hey Stoops, please tell Venerables the tight end is STILL open

If our defense lets Colt McCoy hit little slant passes over the middle all day, it won't matter how good Sam is, even if the line learns how to block, even if the receivers learn to catch the ball.

Besmirch, who uses that word? Sorry Tram, had to follow Trabor and Eschbach in giving you a hard time. Good article though. Probably never use besmirch. How much did Jim and Al give you?

Bradford gives the Offense a lift, what has been the problem on defense? Nobody's been
missing on the defensive team. They should have been carrying the offense till Sam returned.
If the defense was down that means Wilson was right! If OU can't outscore people, they
will lose.

This game is our whole season. Three losses won't get us to a BCS bowl. We'll be in a bowl, probably Holiday, if we lose this, but if we win out we can still do one of the big ones as Big 12 Champ.

The TX offense hasn't exactly been awesome this year. Their defense though is going to eat our offensive line up. Sam will be running for his life on Saturday unless there is some major improvement and I just don't see it. The OU defense is going to have to save the day and keep Shipley under wraps.
Lloyd, Irving - Oct 12, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Sam's return may have lifted the teams spirits and against a Baylor team playing their third team Quarterback that was probably enough. That will not be enough to beat Texas. It will take a perfect performance by all to keep from being routed by Texas let alone beating Texas. Will Sam's return lift the play and execution of the team specifically the O-line and the receivers is the real question. The defense needs to stop Gordon Shipley. Just as Nobody pitches to Albert Pujols, Gordan can not be allowed to gain 236 yards or what ever he got last year. Start hitting Gordan the minute he gets off the bus and don't stop hitting him till the game is over and flood the passing lanes to shut him down. And make Colt throw over defensive lineman and their extended hands all day long-stop the short passing game and make them beat you another way and maybe OU can pull off the upset.

Texas couldn't score 50 against TT or Colorado. THey aren't scoring 50 against OU's defense. I'm not sure OU will pull this one out but I don't think its going to be a blowout like some people are saying

OU is about to uncork its secret offensive scheme to beat Texas. Each potential receiver will wear a large pocket in the front of their jersey. That way, Sam only needs to hit that pocket and there won't be any more dropped passes.
