To be honest, the Sooners looked more like Texas Tech in their black uniforms, but they didn't play like the un-invited Red Raiders. OU wore the black uniforms for the first time in recent memory because Nike sent them to their four "elite” teams — Southern Cal, Miami, North Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky.
The Bulldogs and Wildcats didn't make their postseason tournaments, but the other teams will wear the uniforms throughout the postseason.
•Rivals reunite: Texas closed the regular season last weekend with a three-game sweep of Texas A&M.
The teams meet again today at 4:30 p.m. in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament at Bricktown Ballpark, and the Aggies are on a mission.
"I think our players have something to prove, that we're a lot better than we played last week,” Texas A&M coach Rob Childress said.
Aggies all-conference first baseman Blake Stouffer said: "For whatever reason, we didn't play like we were capable of. There's nothing to do now but win. We've got a definite chip on our shoulder.”
•Sore jaw: Texas trainer Brian Bobier suffered a broken jaw and a broken tooth when he was hit by a line drive fouled into the dugout.
"He's been talking about going on a diet,” Texas coach Augie Garrido said. "It looks like he's gonna go on one. It hit him solid. The ball fell straight down from his face. He had the seams imprinted on his face.”
Bobier returned to the dugout before the end of the game.
"He was yelling with a mouthful of cotton,” Garrido said. "What kind of drugs is he using? It's good to be a trainer.”
•Hitting the skids: Though Texas A&M is the league's second-most potent team behind Oklahoma State, the Aggies have struggled to score lately with just 10 runs in their last four starts.
"It's frustrating the way we've had success all year offensively, and these last four or five games we've had a little bit of a skid,” Stouffer said. "There's not time to feel sorry for yourself now, especially at this point in the season. We've got to shake it off. We've just got to forget what happened and move forward.”
