OU notebook: Kevin Wilson says offense is almost there
Published: October 16, 2009
After scoring just 33 points against Baylor despite almost 600 yards of offense, offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson told his offense in the postgame locker room that they were close. Maybe not close to scoring 60 points in five consecutive games like it did last season, but close to being where Wilson wanted.
"You’re never going to play perfect, but you’re trying to minimize the self-inflicted wounds. We’ve been close, but offensively we’ve shot ourselves in the foot too much,” Wilson said. "We’re close, we’re gaining on it.”Spreading it around
Though Texas receiver Jordan Shipley is Colt McCoy’s most headline-worthy target, he’s by far not the Heisman candidate’s only target.
Dan Buckner, a 6-4 sophomore, has 33 receptions for the Longhorns and more touchdowns than Shipley, with four.
"They’ve plugged him in a little different position,” said Oklahoma secondary coach Bobby Jack Wright. "He’s a guy in the red zone they’re definitely going to, but they’re using him a lot in their passing game, their underneath stuff, their dump-offs.”
Junior James Kirkendoll also has 17 receptions for 187 yards and a touchdown for the Longhorns, including 102 in Texas’ win over Wyoming.
Respect, not hate
While Oklahoma fans spend much of Saturday flashing their inverted horns and yelling obscenities at the orange-clad fans across the Cotton Bowl stands, the attitude on the field won’t be quite as hateful.
"You’ve got two teams that really respect each other,” said sophomore linebacker Travis Lewis. "It’s big time respect. Texas is a great team.”
Lewis did admit that the emotions for a game like Saturday’s are more intense, but didn’t expect those emotions to translate into anything regrettable on the field.
Quotable
→"I love big games, and I get that strictly from my father. If any of you have seen my father around, he’s just a nut. I get that from him, I just love big games. He’s instilled it in me to love rivalry. I just love it. Who doesn’t love rivalry? Clearly the media loves rivalry, otherwise they wouldn’t make this such a big deal.”
— Junior defensive tackle Gerald McCoy

I wish a miracle takes place but honestly, this is the first time I ever feel that OU has no chance.
Can someone tell me when the last time we were shut out was?
