OU notebook: Kevin Wilson says offense is almost there

After scoring just 33 points against Baylor despite almost 600 yards of offense, offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson told his offense in the postgame locker room that they were close. Maybe not close to scoring 60 points in five consecutive games like it did last season, but close to being where Wilson wanted.

"You’re never going to play perfect, but you’re trying to minimize the self-inflicted wounds. We’ve been close, but offensively we’ve shot ourselves in the foot too much,” Wilson said. "We’re close, we’re gaining on it.”

Spreading it around
Though Texas receiver Jordan Shipley is Colt McCoy’s most headline-worthy target, he’s by far not the Heisman candidate’s only target.

Dan Buckner, a 6-4 sophomore, has 33 receptions for the Longhorns and more touchdowns than Shipley, with four.

"They’ve plugged him in a little different position,” said Oklahoma secondary coach Bobby Jack Wright. "He’s a guy in the red zone they’re definitely going to, but they’re using him a lot in their passing game, their underneath stuff, their dump-offs.”

Junior James Kirkendoll also has 17 receptions for 187 yards and a touchdown for the Longhorns, including 102 in Texas’ win over Wyoming.

Respect, not hate
While Oklahoma fans spend much of Saturday flashing their inverted horns and yelling obscenities at the orange-clad fans across the Cotton Bowl stands, the attitude on the field won’t be quite as hateful.

"You’ve got two teams that really respect each other,” said sophomore linebacker Travis Lewis. "It’s big time respect. Texas is a great team.”

Lewis did admit that the emotions for a game like Saturday’s are more intense, but didn’t expect those emotions to translate into anything regrettable on the field.

Quotable
→"I love big games, and I get that strictly from my father. If any of you have seen my father around, he’s just a nut. I get that from him, I just love big games. He’s instilled it in me to love rivalry. I just love it. Who doesn’t love rivalry? Clearly the media loves rivalry, otherwise they wouldn’t make this such a big deal.”

— Junior defensive tackle Gerald McCoy

Very original LMFAO. I'm an OU grad by the way and make a very nice living from the education that I received from there. Anyway, how satisfied are you with Wilson's line after today? Did a great job eh? - 16 yards rushing. Maybe everyone here know's your an idiot. (I do).

Eamon, if you really think this is going to be a shut out you are delusional and must be one of those band wagon fans. You mean to tell me that the Texas defense is so great, that OU won’t even get a field goal? UT-21 OU - 17

I love OU but let's be realistic here. This game will be a total shut-out for us. We will lose and not score a single point.

I wish a miracle takes place but honestly, this is the first time I ever feel that OU has no chance.

Can someone tell me when the last time we were shut out was?

If Wilson doesn't get us beat by going completely 'deer in the headlights' near the goal line or any time after tejas scores...Bob from Edmond is predicting publicly, and never to return if it doesn't come to pass, OU is going to uncork the aspwhooping of a lifetime against these Godless basturds! Sorry for the harsh language ladies, I had to live in tejas for a while.. ..the sight of burnt orange painfully reminds me of changing my infant son's soiled diaper and the hazmat implications of disposing of it. tejas fans are much like the dog who vomits and then eats it slowly staring at you, daring you to stop him. Creatures without a soul tormenting the rest of the known universe with their cow worship, devil sign and fat cheerleaders. Their 7-11's and Jiffy Stops where English is a second language, the endless Interstate construction and delays on the highway where tejans are too stupid to figure out a "Lane Ends - Merge Left" instruction causing backups for 10-100 miles. The 'smug factor' so repugnant and thick that ozone alerts are a daily occurance. Beating, no, humiliating tejas on the field in the Cotton Bowl (don't get me started about this 'stadium' aspect) is our destiny, our Holy Grail for the benefit of all mankind. Watching them slump in the stands after a righteous beat down reminds me of a quote from General Patton walking through the smoking remains of human and machine on a smokey battlefield in France during WW II, staring through the haze, furrowing his brow.."God, I love it...God, help me...I do love it so....".

Lee from Useless, it's time for you to find a new team...Everyone here knows you aren't an OU fan.

Lots of whining and crying negative Nancy's here. Maybe a rough season or two, while not my preference, would be a good way to "weed out the weaklings". Meaning all the fair weather fans that cant act like men win or lose. Like a bunch of spoiled brats throwing a fit in a Walmart toy aisle.

What, you gotta be a teenager to get excited about this game? The question should be how old are you lee, 90? How can anyone be a fan of college football in general, and not be excited about this game?
Patrick, Fayetteville - Oct 16, 2009 at 8:43 am
How old are you brad, 15? I'll be surprised if we even score in this game. Wilson is completely delusional and this blivet proves it. We're just not that good, folks.

This game is always so exciting and intense. My anxiety level is off the charts already! Hopefully I have enough meds to get me through the game. Boomer!

Right maybe we can get pete carrol and lose to Iowa State every year, or Kansas State, maybe the next year Baylor. Or perhaps we can get nick saban and lose to UTAH in the SUGAR BOWL! Or maybe Pope Urban can come since he always wins! OHH I KNOW lets get MACK BROWN who has won 3 of the last 4! (After losing 5 straight!) Stuart maybe your interested in the job, smart guy like you from Brooklyn.
Danney, Oklahoma City - Oct 16, 2009 at 1:01 am
Close isn't good enough. They need to be "there." Otherwise Wilson can call Chuck Long and Stoops can start nosing around back around Western Pa., Youngstown. Maybe Penn State might want him soon, who knows. He loses this one, his days are numbered.
