EDMOND — It's a routine the Edmond Santa Fe football team is getting sick of halfway through the season: close but unable to finish.

The Wolves did almost everything right defensively against the high-powered offense of Del City but still fell short. One point short for the second time this season in a 13-12 defeat Thursday night at Central Oklahoma's Wantland Stadium.

"All we can do is keep on encouraging them," Santa Fe coach Bruce Gowen said.

The Eagles' dynamic duo of wide receivers Donavan Dan and Chris McAlister have been the catalysts to the surprise start for Del City.

Santa Fe chose to play back and allow the Eagles the short passes and not get beat deep.

It worked.

Del City quarterback Chazten Gonzalez completed 20 passes but only for 151 yards.

"That was the best job of covering we've done all season," Gowen said.

The goal was to cause some turnovers to put themselves in good scoring position.

It worked as Santa Fe recovered two fumbles and had an interception.

The defense only allowed 56 rushing yards, and with the Eagles backed up, that was Santa Fe's most effective offensive weapon of the night.

Santa Fe scored on three safeties, with two of them being on Del City punt snaps that went over the head of Alex Burton.

The Wolves (1-4 overall, 0-2 District 6A-1) also received two field goals from Dillon Hammond when the special teams had been a liability the first couple of weeks.

Santa Fe was doing almost everything right and led 12-6 midway through the fourth quarter before Adrian Fletcher scored from 14 yards for Del City with 5:04 left in the game.

Santa Fe might be the best 1-4 team in the state, but that's not much consolation for a program rich in tradition.

The Wolves lost to Edmond North by one point and lost in overtime at Mustang in other gut-wrenching defeats.

"It's hard when you're fighting. It's tough right now," Gowen said. "But we have a lot of pride."

The road doesn't get any easier in District 6A-1 as the Wolves are at Southmoore on Oct. 8.
