Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops was named coach of the year for the fourth time, sharing the honor with Texas Tech’s Mike Leach.

OU quarterback Sam Bradford was named offensive player of the year, marking the fourth time a Sooner quarterback has won the award, and Oklahoma State’s Dez Bryant was selected as the conference’s top special teams player.

Sooner linebacker Travis Lewis was named defensive freshman of the year. And OU senior center Jon Cooper was picked as the offensive lineman of the year, though oddly, he was not voted to the first-team offensive line.

OU has won 23 major awards in the 13-year history of the Big 12, most by any school.

The Sooners had nine first-team selections — more than any other team — and six second-teamers, along with three honorable mentions.

Oklahoma State had four first-team selections, including Bryant both as a receiver and returner. The Cowboys had three second-team picks and five players who received honorable mention.

CNNSI says McCoy is Offensive PoY? Which is it?
The Plainsman, Oklahoma - Dec 3, 2008 at 10:10 pm
How in the world is Stoops coach of the year? I get Leach, but are we to think that Stoops (good coach that he is) did a better job than Gundy?
If the award goes for having the best talent, then defininetly Stoops is the winner, but how can you do as predicted and be coach of the year????

Looks loaded with Texas influence to me. I see 5 okies on the big 12 team...
James, , - Dec 3, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Back in the day OU used to almost as many Defensive players on the first team as offense..
How does a guy make OFFENSIVE LINEMAN of the YEAR and make SECOND TEAM-JON COOPER.

Anyone else notice that the North only had 6 players on the first-team all big 12? And 5 of those are from Mizzou (BTW: How come Mizzou has 3 first team defenders, but still can't stop anybody?)

What a joke. The Big 12 needs to scrap the divisions and just play as one big conference. Who wouldn't rather see OU-UT for the championship on Saturday?
Brian, Edmond - Dec 3, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Zach, Pettigrew missed games because he was injured not suspended.
Kevin, Houston - Dec 3, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Kevin, there's 14 offensive and defensive players selected. It's always been that way. In the end, even if it wasn't, with every team running the spread, it should be added anyway.

Jeff,

Gresham will also be a first round draft pick should he leave this year. He definately would be next season. He's a great blocker. His only knock is that he can't catch the ball sometimes, but he's still a darn good receiver. Pettigrew is a great blocker, but he's better in the passing game and more important to OSU that Greshman is to OU. I think the only reason he wasn't mentioned is because he missed part of the year with a suspension.

Secondly, I think that Clapp made the list simply because of all the teams in the Big 12, OU uses him more than any other team uses its fullback. He's a GREAT blocker and a pretty good receiver, but he only has one carry this entire season. By comparison, look at what Lane has accomplished this season for A&M. They moved him to running back and he's carried the ball less than 100 times if I'm correct.

Darren, Coffman's not even in the top 3 tight ends in the nation. Greshman and Pettigrew are the top two tight ends in the country. Wisconsion's TE is the third best, but because he was injured most of the year and because his team fell of the map, so did he.

Coffman's a great TE, but he's not the best. There's not a player in the country that can match up to either Gresham or Pettigrew. I've seen Coffman shut down. Answers to that? There are none.

Your Mizzou bias shows. Next thing you're going to tell us is Daniel deserves to be the First Team quarterback. The only snub I see Mizzou's way is that Maclin should have shared the speical teams award with Bryant.

I said after the Texas-OU game that Brian Orakpo would be the Defensive Player of the Year in the Big 12.

I've had a knack to be right on with these things. Hopefully the trend will continue.

Every team does *not* run some form of the spread, and a lot of teams utilize a FB in the spread. West Virginia, for instance, utilizes tight ends and fullbacks, and they are an excellent example of a team that uses fullbacks.

Any team that runs out of the pistol (OSU, Missouri) utilize a fullback. Any team that runs out of the i-formation (OU, Texas, Nebraska, TAMU) utilize a fullback.

We may not be out there 3-yard and a cloud of dust, but when it's 4th and goal from the one yardline with 3 seconds left on the clock...most teams are going to send out a lead blocker. Welcome to college football.
Jason, Norman - Dec 3, 2008 at 1:06 pm
That would be great if they could all play together against another conference. Can imagine the offense.
tyler, yukon - Dec 3, 2008 at 12:02 pm
I think at the end of each season our conference teams, coached by the conference coach of the year should play other conference players' of the year, just like high school. Just looking at this, I don't think the SEC could compete with the Big 12! I'm just sayin'..
Douglas, Yukon - Dec 3, 2008 at 11:34 am
Vote for Sam for the Heisman! He needs your vote badly. Please tell all the sooner fans you know to go vote, you can vote once per day. We are closing the gap, spread the word!

why is there even a FB category in the Big XII? Every team runs some form of the spread and you don't have a FB in the spread. If you are going to select 2 RB's then don't select a FB. I also like how they selected 3 WR's to make sure Maclin was included. 14 first team selections is a little excessive.
Kevin, Houston - Dec 3, 2008 at 11:13 am
how is cooper Offensive Linemen of the year but 2nd team all big 12? never seen that b4. That's like winnin the MVP, but bein 2nd team all-nba. just a thOUght.
Jiohdee, atlanta - Dec 3, 2008 at 10:16 am
If there are no standout FB's in a conference, don't you usually give it to a FB that is a really good run blocker. Or for that matter, a team that actually runs the ball.
tyler, yukon - Dec 3, 2008 at 10:09 am
Gresham should be the 1st team TE, just because Pettigrew missed 4 games. But Chase Coffman ahead of Pettigrew, I don't think so.
tyler, yukon - Dec 3, 2008 at 10:03 am
How does Zac Robinson and Brandon Pettigrew not make the honorable mention team?!?! Robinson was 4th in the nation in passing efficiency and his yards-per-attempt was 2nd in the Big XII only to Bradford (10.38 to 10.36 ypa).

Pettigrew missed what? 4 1/2 games this year due to injury yet still had over 400 yards and was key on the offensive line. He will, as everyone knows, be a 1st round selection.

I understand why they aren't 1st or 2nd team... but not even HM?

Where are all the TU fans? I mean shouldn't the all-conference team have been decided based on what happened at the Cotton Bowl? Texas won that game so I'd think that every playere on here should be a Texas coach and player. Someone call ESPN!
Michael, coppell - Dec 3, 2008 at 9:39 am
*I meant "should" not "would"
Allen, Oklahoma City - Dec 3, 2008 at 8:54 am
Before the rest of my Sooner fans start flaming me, I do want to add that if Gresham hadn't dropped so many passes throughout the year I think he would be #1 on the list. Coffman catches everything thrown his way.
Allen, Oklahoma City - Dec 3, 2008 at 8:53 am
Darren, I agree with you on that. Unfortunately, it kind of reminds me of the Heisman nowadays. If your team loses a 2-3 games, it somehow diminishes the accomplishments of individual players on the team.
