Berry Tramel: No. Stoops was either mistaken or just trying to turn the heat up on an already-frenzied Sooner crowd. You can’t go 59-2 at home without some help from the seats.
John Rohde: He was 100-percent right. OU is a reactionary crowd. They react to what happens. What they need to do is become a factor before a play transpires. That was Stoops’ point.
Tramel: Maybe OU isn’t the loudest crowd in America. But it’s not a morgue. Crowd noise generally is overrated. Miami U. had one of the great homefield streaks of the last 50 years, yet often played in front of half-full houses at the Orange Bowl.
Rohde: The biggest reason OU is 59-2 at home under Stoops is because of its talent on the field, but the Sooners face some big-time hostility whenever they go on the road. Stoops would just like visitors to face the same challenge.
Tramel: I think they do face it. You hear visiting teams all the time talk about the atmosphere at Owen Field. It’s only media and other fans — and now the Sooner coach — who question the volume level.
Rohde: Look, there are several ways to plead for crowd support at home. Stoops chose to be blunt. It’s no different than the approach he uses on the field. The crowd received his message and will be in top form tonight.
