Brent Rinehart's comic book targets foes

By John Estus
Published: July 17, 2008

The "liberal good ol' boys,” gays and Satan are doing everything they can to get Oklahoma County Commissioner Brent Rinehart out of office, a comic book prepared by his re-election campaign claims.

The comic book, obtained Wednesday by The Oklahoman, is expected to be mailed to voters by Rinehart's campaign, Rinehart said.

"A drowning man tends to thrash about,” state Attorney General Drew Edmondson, one of the targets in the book, said through a spokesman. "Nothing Rinehart says is worthy of comment or rebuttal.”

Edmondson filed felony campaign finance charges against Rinehart last year, alleging Rinehart and his former campaign manager illegally funded the 2004 campaign for county commissioner. A trial has been scheduled for September.

Another of the book's targets, Sheriff John Whetsel, called it "extremely pathetic and very bigoted. I was taken back that in 2008, a candidate would use that type of inflammatory material and do it under the name of being a Christian.”

Whetsel is depicted on two pages. In one, a sequence alleging jailer abuse of inmates at the county jail is followed by Whetsel demanding taxpayer money so he can buy "more, more and more toys!”

The 16-page comic book makes fun of homosexuals and criticizes Rinehart's political opponents. It features a man and woman admiring Rinehart's often-controversial political career.

Other prominent characters are an angel, who supports Rinehart, and Satan, who supports Rinehart's critics.

"It's more or less a story of my experiences of the last four years of being the county commissioner of District 2,” Rinehart said.

An angel, a devil and county politics
Rinehart acknowledged that the comic is edgy at times, but said it explains important issues in a light-hearted way that his constituents will enjoy.

"It makes it interesting and something that people will actually look at and understand,” Rinehart said.

Toga-wearing gays, political figures, trench coat-clad henchmen, concerned residents and Rinehart round out the comic's cast.

"This is one of the strangest things I've ever seen,” said Keith Gaddie, a political science professor at the University of Oklahoma. "I've never seen a comic book with the phrase ‘anal sodomy' in it before. That was a new one for me.”

Gaddie said comics were common political campaign tools decades ago, but not for today.

"He's pretty much grinding every ax he's got from his days in the county commission,” Gaddie said. "In a way, it's a sophisticated piece.”

In one sequence, Satan says: "If I can get the kids to believe homosexuality is normal!”

The angel replies: "Hey Satan, not with Brent around you won't!”

Rinehart said he doesn't think the depiction is inappropriate and that he is proud of the comic.

"The history of my office is that I do expose the homosexual agenda, and that it does exist in the state of Oklahoma, and my history also would show that I am very much opposed to the homosexual agenda,” Rinehart said.

Rinehart said he spent two months writing the comic. He said his friend Shane Suiters did the illustrations. Rinehart wouldn't say who is managing his campaign, and wouldn't say if he's running it himself.

‘Liberal good ol' boys' targeted in comic
Others criticized in the comic, which was leaked via e-mail this week, joined Whetsel in condemning it as a distasteful hit-piece.

In the comic, Satan endorses Rinehart's opponents in the July 29 Republican primary for the District 2 county commissioner seat. The angel endorses Rinehart.

The strip opens with a proclamation that Rinehart is a Republican and Christian who stands up to "liberal good ol' boys” at the county courthouse.

"I do not know who the good ol' boys at the courthouse are,” said County Assessor Leonard Sullivan, a Republican.

Sullivan and Rinehart have had public disagreements in the past, and Sullivan said the comic is further proof that Rinehart is a troubled man.

"I've really encouraged him on more than one occasion to get professional help. He really needs it,” said Sullivan, who is not depicted in the comic.

Corporation Commissioner Jim Roth, who is gay and often disagreed with Rinehart while serving as a county commissioner, said he is no longer surprised by Rinehart's attacks.

"It's typical Brent Rinehart subterfuge to distract from his bad job performance and likely criminal misdeeds,” Roth said.

Roth is not targeted directly in the comic book. In a scene with five gay men holding up signs, one of the signs says "Jim Roth is our leader.”

Ok…6:03 pm and approx. 84,000 registered voters went to vote…252,421 did
nothing….the ones who did not vote could have elected Mickey Mouse. Maybe
this is why we keep voting for the same people because the same voters
are the only ones who show up.

I find it very funny, at the least, when people like Rinehart, or some of his supporters on here, claim they are following GODS word and doing what is right. I especially find it funny when people pick specific quotes from the bible to back up their statements. I do not think the bible or its verses were ever meant to be utilized as a weapon for hate, which is truthfully what is happening here. So called Christians have been utilizing bible verses and their religion for years to preach hate and indifference. Is it not the Christians job to set an example for others and live their lives in a manner which reflects Jesus? After all "WWJD" (What Would Jesus Do)? I seriously doubt the Jesus refered to in the bible would preach such hate. As a gay male I am offended by Rineharts message of hate. However, as a christian, I forgive him for his comments and pray that the God I have come to know, a loving, generous and forgiving God, will truly make himself known to Rinehart and those others who preach such hate. I am truly thankful that God is going to be the judge of my life and how I have lived it and not people like Rinehart or his supporters.

The hubris is staggering: angels on Rinehart's side, Satan on the side of his enemies. Anyone who can credit such hyperbole and ego as righteousness needs to re-check their connection with rational, ethical thought. What pandering! With all the things going on in this country that are really afflicting people, he wants to talk about the "threat" of homosexuality? Not the absence of health care; not the illicit Iraq war in which, surely, some of his constituents have died or been badly injured; not the lack of a coherent, forward-looking energy policy. Good that he's thinking about infrastructure: kudos for that. Maybe he should stick with real world issues from which his constituents may actually derive a benefit.

By the way, to those who are criticizing his grammar and spelling: you might want to check your own before posting and feeling all superior.

The comic booklet would not be something I would recommend for children to get a hold of .. or to read, bashing people during election time is something I will not do during my election campaign ... smear campaigns are generally negative, childish and senseless to me.

I’ve had dealings with the Sheriff, and some of his deputies. The Sheriff might have been a good man for a department with one, but no more than two cells, and maybe 5 inmates at tops. If you tried to match wits with the Sheriff, you would find he is only half prepared. As to the deputies, I’ve found with most all of them, if their i.q. had been two points lower, they would have been plants.
You could train orangutans, shave them, put them in uniform, and they would respond faster, be more courteous and better looking than what’s there now (this applies to the police department also). As to the A.G. Drew Edmondson, he’s in the same category with the Sheriff and the Deputies, but not the orangutans. If you are looking for a perfect definition of “obscene” in the meaning of State Justice, you have it in Drew Edmondson, with DA Prater, and a few of his Asst. DA’s like Pam Stillings, and her boyfriend Geiger, and a couple others who are just starting DA school 101 in the wings. I have never meet Mr. Rinehart in person, but have had the opportunity to call his office numerous times, and have talked with him and several members of his staff. He and his staff have returned my calls and I have always found them to be courteous, understanding and willing to listen. I can not say that about the other commissioners or Drew Edmondson when I tried calling, and talking with them. Their attitude and manner was no better than that of an un-flushed toilet. As to the Homosexuals, the Bible says love the person, hate the sin, or if you want, take all of homosexuals males put them on an island, make sure they get food, etc., and don’t let them have any contact with females for 80 years. Do the same things to the lesbians, but no contact with men, and check back in 80 or 100 years, and see if they did as the bible said, “Be fruitful and multiply”.

Not all Okies are idiots. Please remember that. I am a Christian, a heterosexual, and in many ways conservative, and I still think this is absolute rubbish. Equating all homosexuals to pedophiles?? Is he saying that all HETERosexuals are attracted to children of the opposite sex? For goodness sakes, people, leave other people alone and focus on fixing yourself. Who are you to judge what's right and wrong? There's no way any thinking person could vote for him after this.

As a gay man in OKC, I would like to share the gay "agenda" with everyone. You see, it is not about being treated fairly or on par with our heterosexual conterparts as some gays would have you belive. And it is certainly not about being able to visit your gay partner in the hospital as a family member or being able to leave property to your partner upon your demise...oh no, it is not about these things. The true gay agenda has been up until now very secret, but I am prepared to share it with everyone. As soon as the gay agenda is enacted, all gays (and gays only!) will be able to show their "gay agenda card" and receive a discount on gas, jump to the front of the line at the grocery store, and drive 15 miles over the posted speed limit. In the unlikely event that a gay agenda member is arrested, all they need to do is simply flash their gay agenda card, and voila, they will be released. The latest Cher farewell concert sold out? Not a problem if you have a gay agenda card. And heterosexuals, don't feel left out. When the gay agenda is official, we will outlaw heterosexual divorce (I mean, seriously...what better way to protect marriage than to outlaw divorce?), and in the interest of protecting families, we will once and for all outlaw heterosexual adoption (come on, you can't have a kid without doing the hard work anymore), and finally, we will make it once again legal for heterosexuals to be fired from their job just for being straight. You see people, thats it in a nutshell, that is the gay agenda.

He always had some severe mental issues and should've never been in office. The stress was just too much for him and he got worse and worse. He is very anti-gay, which I don't have a problem with, but there was always something a bit scary about him because out of the blue he'd tell someone that a man having relations with a boy who has developed no hair yet is not having a gay affair. He'd just pop that one on people and off subject. Always made me wonder what he was secretly into.

All Brent is doing is letting the people know about this good old boy system and what happens if you don't go along with it. We need more people like him to help develope a fair government in Oklahoma. The businesses here in this state are even on the good old boy system. Not what you know but who you know. We need people that have lived in different areas of the country to run for office. Back woods is a primative way to govern a state. Oklahoma needs bright and new ideas for the future and we need to get the Good Old Boys out of the way to get these ideas inforced. Way to go Brent. It is unbelieveable to me how far these people will go to eliminate you views and ideas. I believe your case should go to a Federal Court because of the bias here in the state government. It is not an illness. It is not a choice or a decision. It is no more against nature than heterosexuality, as it is found in over 1,500 species of animals. There isn't a clear conclusion on it because there is no clear conclusion on the reasons behind *any* sexual orientation. However, the fact that it's found at the same rate across races, cultures, and continents, as well as within the animal kingdom, strongly indicates a biological base. I believe that there are several different factors behind one's sexual orientation. Psychological and social influences don't "create" homosexual people.

Paula, it is a mental illness or maybe just a poor decision. Just as compulsive lying and drug abuse are. If nothing else it goes against nature. The fact that government funded research facilities have failed to find a flawless conclusion on the matter only makes since because alot of this comes from the politicians themselves. Fear of alienating the liberal vote deters govt from supporting such research. Makes sense for them if they want to keep getting elected.

There is no (nor was there *ever*) scientific or medical evidence indicating that homosexuality is an illness or disorder. It is because of this that the APA declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. That was 35 years ago. I don't know one single person, especially in this area of the country, who is a supporter of LGBT rights because it's the popular thing to do, or because they are afraid to say they are against it. However I know a few people who are afraid to admit they support LGBT equality for fear of public reprimand. I'm not sure where you get your information, but it's not true.

The gay agenda is to have the 'gay lifestyle' thought of as normal. To have it treated as if it were on the level of racism and the like instead of an immoral sickness. It is trying to have it completely submersed in the American way of life instead of being shunned. If you oppose it then you are a bigot somehow. The vast majority of the gay support comes from people who cannot think for themselves or are too afraid to stand up for what they believe in because of fear of public reprimand. Either that or they just base their beliefs on what other people tell them too.

This comic strip, if that's what you want to call it, is totally disgusting to me. And to think this man, and I use that term loosely, actually got elected the first time. It's obvious that this man Rinehart has some very serious personal issue he needs to deal with. Rinehart has used his position to foster discrimination and limit people rights under the law. Why do people in Oklahoma continue to elect people feel the need to have hate-filled tirades. First Kerns now Rinehart. Shame one you.

Jim, it is called an evolving standard of decency. It was the media propaganda who made it OK for different races to marry also I guess. Get a clue.

I am not homosexual. And most liberals might label me conservative. (I think the Democratic Party is a burning ship without a rudder -- but that's another story). However, this comic book thing is just nutty. Rinehart appears to have some serious personal issues. Why do people in Oklahoma County elect folks like him (including Sally Kern), who go on hate-filled tirades and campaigns of fear? Is it something in the water?

Jim, it is bigotry. There is a difference between disagreeing with someone and using your "agenda" (like Rinehart and religious conservatives do) to try to affect harm and/or limitations on a person or persons rights. Grown men and women do not need your approval. Seriously. And who made you God? Judge not lest ye be judged. It is bigotry and your ignorance in all likelihood will be parodied even by your own children when they get a little older. They will ashamed of your behavior.

Roger from Keller...I didn't move to TX to get away from people who voted for dubya...unfortunately they are everywhere...but I moved to get to a better economy, more progressive state, diversity, etc. etc...not saying that we don't have our idiot politicians here, but none of them hold a candle to rinehart, inhofe, fallin, kern, terrill, etc. What a bunch of idiots...and my point is YOU people in OK keep electing them and making yourself the laughing stock of the nation...keep it up...it is good comical reading after all.

Roger, Keller, I was thinking the same thing about Keith from Arlington. Pretty sure Bush won Texas in both elections and they had DeLay. In other words Keith, you fail. Jim from Del City is also a failure however so you're in good (bad?) company. I have yet to have anyone explain to me what the gay agenda is. Anyone? Also, what media do you watch, Jim. This paper and all of Ok news stations are ridiculously conservative. It's laughable.

Jim from Del City gets a chubby when he sees a naked guy at his local gym. He then comes on this board to rid himself of his impure thoughts. Who influences your mind, Captain Kook? I'm guessing no one since you appear to not have a mind.
Keith from Arlington. You moved to Texas to get away from people who voted twice for Dubya? Are you mental? I know many think Dubya came straight from hell but he came from TEXAS!!!

Jim, if you think standing up for equality for the LGBT community is the popular opinion in Oklahoma then you are mistaken. We face more opposition than you do. That makes it the un-popular opinion. But I stand up for what I believe in, regardless of the fact that it's unpopular. If the "agenda" to which you refer means fighting for what's right, then there's an agenda. But if you think it means the same thing Sally Kern thinks, you're mistaken yet again.

Race and 'sexual orientation' are not on the same level. You all just continually spew out what you have heard from the media for the last 15 years. If they say it enough you all will believe it and eventually take it as the truth. Social manipulation of the masses.

How ridiculous. I hope he gets voted OUT for this! Oklahoma City needs to get rid of people like this who keep trying to set OKC backwards. OKC is a diverse community with lots of people, including Gays. So there should be no one acting like an idiot or publicly opposing them. Can you imagine if Rinehart was opposed to OKC Blacks, Asians, Jews, or Hispanics - what the reaction would be? [He'd be voted out and forever banished in the community if not exiled!] Should be the same here. He committed political suicide!

The comic book is a dumb idea. The fact that there is a gay agenda in the political world is not off base though. Immorality is now seen as a virtue instead of a vice. You can thank your elected officials and the popular media conglomerates for slowly changing (manipulating) the minds of the American public.

The comic book is amatuerish, however it provided me with a good laugh! That stuff with Whetsel is just hilarious ! Yeah, what's up with that "Armored Assault vehicle" that was sitting in front of the station in Midwest city? It looks like it is from the French-Algerian war, and has been through several minefields. Are they actually planning on using that thing? And there certainly are issues with the county jail. I think this comic book is a new political first.

But in all seriousness you have to give Rinehart one thing; he wasn't afraid to re-affirm his views. Granted they seem extreme, but so are many others. I for one do not agree with him personally, but as I am someone who strives to knock down political correctness, I think this was a strong PR maneuver.
