So what was Conradt thinking Wednesday when he lifted a template off The Oklahoman's web site, NewsOK.com, wrote and pasted a bogus story about the Sooner pair's arrest on cocaine distribution charges, then posted it on a message board?
The 36-year-old Conradt says he wasn't thinking.
"I want to express my deepest apologies to the families,” Conradt said Wednesday night, after his story was reported as fact by at least two Texas radio stations. "That's the thing I'm regretful about. I didn't want to hurt anyone.”
An apology might not be enough to smooth this over.
"I'm going to prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law,” said Kevin Jones, Landry's father. "I've got deep enough pockets to do it.”
Oklahoman publisher David Thompson said, "When this was brought to our attention, we took immediate action. Through our technology and news teams, we tracked him down and told him to cease and desist. We take this very seriously and will consider legal action.”
OU associate athletic director Kenny Mossman said the hoax is just the latest in a disturbing trend.
"We feel it's real unfortunate how many things have germinated from an anonymous starting point that are unfounded, untrue and, as this story proves, hurtful,” Mossman said.
"Coaches and players are berated, and nobody attaches a name to it. The Internet has enabled a lot of this kind of thing to happen, and it's really disappointing.”
Conradt said he was on a Nebraska message board when some OU fans began writing smack.
"I just wanted to get 'em all riled up, I guess,” Conradt said.
He googled Sooner sports and came across the NewsOK.com template and says he didn't even realize it was The Oklahoman's Web site.
"It was a bad decision,” Conradt said. "When I got home, I got on my computer, one of the moderators on the Oklahoma site emailed me and said some Oklahoma people are upset about this. That's when I took it down.”
Kevin Jones said he received a couple of frantic calls after the hoax spread across the Internet.
"I knew it was a prank thing right away,” Jones said. "Anybody that knows Sam or knows Landry knows the story wasn't true to begin with. But when radio stations down in Houston and Austin report it, it's very hurtful.
"Why would somebody be so malicious about it? Don't know why someone would trample two kids like this. I was just dumbfounded. People need to learn from this.”
Kelly Dyer Fry, vice president of news and information for OPUBCO Communications Group, said users can determine if a story comes from the NewsOK.com server by the URL. If numbers precede "newsok.com,” the link originated elsewhere.

This story is different. Cocaine distribution? Pretty serious stuff...if he wanted to be funny, he could have said that they were hanging out with Dusty downtown beating people up when they walked out of bars, or stealing gas for their mopeds, they even could have fallen out of the back of their pickup while they were shooting pop bottle rockets at each other. They could have pulled hamstrings as they ran from the police carrying armloads full of coats with DeMarcus. Cocaine distribution??? The story made a major market and was reported as fact? That's a whole different level. Those stories would have been funny, looking back a few days later. Prosecute him.
It's amusing how many people who have done similar things or said similar things are all worked up over someone doing it about OU. I've seen the message boards. It's goes back and forth. There is so much between OU and Texas on the message boards every year that lawyers could stay busy year round prosecuting people. Not suprising that it was Texas stations that spread the story the fastest.
Yeah prosecute! Instead of letting it die and letting Sam and Landry get on with their lives let's bring more press and publicity to the story! That sounds like a good plan! Lets use a little logic here guys...
I hope they do prosecute. That could cause NCAA investigations and start a rumor mill when the NFL comes calling. THat kind of Rumor dropped Marino to the 27th pick in 1983. So to say it was just someone having fun is stupid, your responsible for your behavior and actions and do do something if you can't handle consequences. Go get me Kevin make him apologise on National TV and radio and admit that he's a stupid Texan and Nebraska fan.
Adam from Houston likes to make himself feel better about where he resides. Did you guys know he lives in Texas? Gosh all of us are "dumb okies". Did you know that someone in Texas made up a fake story about two OU football players and now may be in trouble with the law? Dumb texan.
my bad..I reread the story and saw that he wasn't a college kid..I assumed he was...regardless, he was an immature adult fan who took it to far...no one was hurt by that..
Come on...He is a college kid who was having fun. Honestly, no one got hurt because of this event. I love OU and bleed crimson, but for Kevin Jones to say he is going to prosecute to the fullest extent and he has deep pockets...what an idiot. That makes me not like Landry, because of the statement about deep pockets and his dad sounding like a self righteous jerk. It is one thing as a parent to be upset and talk about possible legal action, but to add to it, how deep your pockets are, is plain dumb! I personally don't care to ever watch Landry play now, because of his unforgiving, arrogant father.
Please over reacting quite a bit!!! It was a message board. Which is junk and full of rumors. A message board should not be sought for true facts. It is sad when media outlets are starting to use message boards as a resource to print or use on the 6 o'clock news. The blame should be placed on the TV station or radio station out of Houston who ran with this story...hook...line...and sinker. Don't blame James...he was just having some fun...that got carried away.
Mary, what did Jenni say about Bobby Reid that wasn't true? Where is he playing football today. Could it be your coach just got upset because someone saw it before he did? Why are you crying so while you complain about OU's fans doing the same thing?
John from Stigler: It won't be at all hard to nail this sob in court. Whether or not any criminal laws were violated, this is a clear case of libel, with obvious malicious intent. So a civil case of libe against this jerk is almost a no-brainer. Libel is usually hard to prove, since it is permissible to use hearsay evidence in defense of the libelous statements. It's okay, for instance, to say that "someone told me that their cousin heard from his best friend that so-and-so is a scumbag". All you have to do is prove that you HONESTLY thought the libelous statement was true, and you're off the hook! In this case, the guy even admits he made it up out of the whole cloth simply to hurt the players involved and their fans. He has no defense. And all you need in civil trial is a 9-3 jury, not unanimous. Looks like a slam dunk to me...the only question is how many years will this guy be working for the Jones family? He's toast unless Kevin Jones wants to cut him a HUGE break and not sue.
I will not fire back with name calling as it only makes you look worse in the current situation. To those who came here to cry .. go home ... its not worth your time.. just as it is not worth my time to sit here and fireback belittling names... all I can say is Karma is a son of a#@$%^ .. to each his own.
People do the strangest things. Why anyone would go to such great lengths is ridiculous. It doesnt matter if it is OU Qb's or local attorneys or Mike Gundy. It is slander & it is something that I would not want written about me on a message board or read aloud on radio stations. Jenni Carlsons article may have been ill timed & in poor taste, but it want that far off base, look around mary & see it for what it is, no one actually denied that was going on with Reid.
We'll kick both of their arses in football as we have lately and all will be done. I don't care what an idiot NU fan living in the stinkpot called Austin says.
I find it amusing that Berry Tramel wants everyone off the message boards for irresponsible posts but when it comes to irresponsible journalism like Jenni Carlson's hack job of Bobby Reid it's editorial license! Hey when Berry and Jenni and the multitude of OU fans quit attacking OSU players, coaches and it's administration without merit I'll gladly get off! Until then, ride the Orange Power Wave you crybabies! I don't condone what this "Nebraska" fan did I just think it's hilarious how you OU Goons blow everything out of proportion. Had this been two OSU players this "Nebraska" fan slandered the Daily Oklahoman would have printed it as fact in their newspaper. If the Daily Oklahoman wants people off the message boards then "don't make it available"! Where does he got off telling people to stay off the message boards? Weasel!
I did a google on this guy. He knew what he was doing. According to his Facebbok profile, he is a Computer Specialist. A COMPUTER SPECIALIST!!! He is not an 18 year old idiot. At 36 he should have enough self control in place to keep him from making stupid, childish and immature errors in judgment. I think he deserves what is coming to him. The OKlahoman probably has a good civil lawsuit against him for copyright infringements.
Adam, while I agree with you, I am not sure calling everyone from Oklahoma "dumb okies" works for you. You live in Texas, I have met way too many "dumb texans" who think they are their own country. Get over yourself, moron.
If the guy wanted this to be a "joke" he should have emailed it to his friends and not posted it in a public forum. All I ask is that Husker fans everywhere and anyone living in the Austin vicinity take all steps necessary to make sure that Conradt's eligibility to reproduce/contribute further to the gene pool be removed!
John in Owasso and anyone else this applies too. Calling this man makes you worse then the man himself. Don't lower yourselves to his level. John, you should be ashamed of yourself. I doubt you are though. Don't make the Sooners look worse by threating some moron fan. Sad that you actually looked up his address and phone number. Wow, what a loser you are.
Yeah, let's make the taxpayers support his butt for a few years. And on top of that, let's make sure that when he gets out, we have to support him because he's too broke to support himself. That makes perfect sense. You all are wanting to use a sledge hammer to perform brain surgery here. This is not a crime that should be punishible by time in prison or by truly ruining someone's life. For heaven's sake!
Both of these young men have aspirations for their future that could have been damaged by this crime. This was not a stunt. It was a crime. Violation of copyright. Slander. Libel. And don't give me this crap about it being a prank. This guy is no kid, he is 36 years old. And BTW, he has never attended school at Nebraska ONE SINGLE DAY. I hope he is sentenced to a few years in federal prison and sued for every penny he has and ever will make.
JR from Omaha has it right; it was just one idiot fan, nothing more and nothing less. If anyone is going to sue this numbskull in Austin it should be the Oklahoman for copyright violations. Other than that a civil lawsuit by Jones or Bradford's families is overkill. Besides, there aren't any monetary damages sustained by anybody. When that's the case you basically win the suit, pay the lawyers and walk away with nothing. Cooler heads should prevail; this idiot should make a public apology and the whole thing should then die a merciful death.
Im an OU fan living in Overland Park Kansas. Right on the border between MO. and KS. If you think this is bad come up here and listen to fans of MO and KS dog on ea other. Ks had the best team in Football last year in over 100 years. The Missouri fans beat them in Arrowhead and you would have thought it was the second coming. They hate ea other and its a ball for an outsider to listen to them go at ea other. By the way OU beat MO last year (Twice) As an OU fan I just take it for granted we are going to win, no smack just the true nature of things.
I acutally haven't bad mouthed OU one bit. I have pretty much left out the fact that this was an OU player. I would feel the same way if it was a Boise State, Oregon, Ohio State or any player from any other school. I was just trying to point out how ridiculous it is for people to get so bent out of shape over this. Sam and Landry probably don't really care that a 36 year old loser is trying to make them appear to be something they are not. I mean they are the ones getting a free education and 4 more years to play the sport they love. Not some internet blogger in Austin TX that has nothing better to do with their lives. SO Jamie quit getting so defensive. I am assuming however you did not attend either school or else you would have loyalty to one school or the other.
Yes and if OU hadn't had such a terrible history of recruiting the "wrong" kind of athlete no one would have given this any creedence whatsoever. But since OU has such a checkered past of illegal activity associated with it's athletic department it's no wonder heads turned. If I were a five star recruit I'd save my pride and go elsewhere!
Your right never be a Sooner.. we do have more championships to win and we will do so this year. Thanks for reminding us of something we already knew... If you dont like OU then why come bad mouth them.. should I come bad mouth OSU when something is written about them. For Goodness sakes they are both Oklahoma teams .. get over it and support both. I think its ridiculous to see a state SO divided over two stinkin COLLEGE teams. Suppport both and grow up.
Mary,Im a proud Sooner fan. Your comments alone are classless. You trying to slam OU fans and supporters are classless. I think you need to grow up. Newsok.com is capable of handling the issue. Everyone just calm down.
How did he ruin a kid's life and reputation? What have they lost b/c of this story, how have they suffered? One unfounded story from someone is not going to ruin someone's life. Is Sam still the starting quarter back for the sooners?? YES. Are they both not still getting a top notch education for free?? YES. Are they not going to be having thousands of people cheering for him every Saturday once the season starts? YES. Are they still going to be heros to some small OU fans?? YES. So I am still at a loss as to anyone's life was ruined?? Like I said its getting more attention now than the original story did. Why drag out a lawsuit and continue to give Conradt publicity? It was a stupid thing to do, he got caught, the air has been cleared. GET OVER IT! Those people that think "He needs to be SEVERLY punished TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW." That's ridiculous. Its going to end up as a joke on the team. It's getting closer to football season and I am sure the only thing these boys want to do is think about improving their game NOT an impending law suit. Why distract them with a bunch of legal mess. I mean since OU fans live and breathe football I'm sure they wouldn't want their starting quarter back being distracted by legal worries. I mean they got a BCS bowl to win this year... right?
I don't know? Maybe you're right! I was just quoting Bill Callahan. Maybe it's Arkansas who are the Hillbillies and OU who are the Rednecks. Alls I know is that OU fans are the worst pervaders of trash talk of anyone in the Big XII. Totally classless! But cast one stone in their direction and the gloves come off! Well I guess you've got the Power of the Press on your side since the Gaylords are major contributors to the University. If I had a nickel for every unruely comment posted by an OU fan I'd be a millionaire. You're a bunch of classless poor losers and you can't beat Appalahcia State in a Bowl Game!!!
Oh come on..."literally ruining a kid’s life "?!?! I admit what this guy did was wrong, but to say he is "literally ruining a kid’s life" is really taking it to extremes.
Mike of OKC, thank you for you rcomments and I couldnt agree more, I wish some people would use those edit buttons and hold their tongues. There is simply no reason to take it as far as some do here. _________________________
Jason of Logan county, thats some interesting stuff you found .. thanks for sharing it. ____________
Mary.. you cant lose gracefully here so you think name calling will help ? Please move on.. perhaps OSU will do better this year. By all means I hope they do.. I would love to support TWO GREAT TEAMS FROM OKLAHOMA !! Until then .. its OU ALL THE WAY~
This is funny, check the quote a few years back from an article about "Darth Husker" aka James Conradt:
"Husker fan James Conradt of Lincoln, known on-line as "Darth Husker," contributes to the message boards at BigRedReport.com on Thursday night. Conradt says it takes time to build a reputation for providing truth and separate oneself from those who "stir the pot.""
"Plus if Kevin Jones sues this GUY what is he going to get from him, most likely nothing! Just a lot of wasted time, money, and maybe grief for Landry by people ragging him about his daddy having to fight for him.
Never Be A Sooner, Stillwater - Jul 10, 2008 1:37 PM
To "Never Be A Sooner, Stillwater", sorry but your dead wrong on this one. I too am a big OSU fan having graduated from OUS and my wife is from Stillwater. You obviously are, from your name, not an OU fan. But what this James W. Conradt did is VERY wrong and went beyond hoax. He needs to be SEVERLY punished TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW. You are talking about literally ruining a kid’s life and reputation. The two kids are probably already tainted in some people’s minds due to this “hoax”. If this were your kid, I think you might have different attitude on this matter. Here’s to his daddy as you cal him, Kevin Jones, taking this guy to the cleaners for all he's might be worth now and for many years in the future. No he may not get anything out of this low-life and probably won’t' be he certainly will NEVER do this again and if the settlement is large enough, it certainly might make other think twice about doing something like this in the future.
Isn't this the same type of thing tabloid magazines do to celebrities on a daily basis? Should we sue them for every story they make up?? Sam and Landry have chosen to be in the national spot light by playing football for a nationally known team they should know they may have to deal with ridiculous, crap like this. Every research paper I ever did in college my professors always stressed that the majority of information on the internet is not from a reputable source. So how did what this GUY post so tramatically affect the two quarter backs?? For what a half of a day maybe people that didn't know them thought they might be drug dealers??? Who cares?? Now that it has come out as a hoax more people are going to read about the whole ordeal and know that they are both upstanding young men. Then if they take the high road and do nothing they look like the classier bigger people. So actually they come out better than when no one knew anything about them. Plus if Kevin Jones sues this GUY what is he going to get from him, most likely nothing! Just a lot of wasted time, money, and maybe grief for Landry by people ragging him about his daddy having to fight for him.
"Defamation is the communication of a statement that makes a false claim, expressively stated or implied to be factual, that may give an individual, business, product, group, government or nation a negative image." Now, tell me again how the 1st Amendment covers this situation?
J.R.,Omaha; Bob,Springfield; Jeff,Spring; Cody,Tulsa;
Jamie,Bethany; and Leslie,New Braunfels, thanks for being shining lights in a, sometimes, sea of sports fanatic darkness. You epitomize the true nature of college sports fans. Everyone here should be inspired by your example.
hahahahhahaha
this is funny stuff right here man.

this idiot is 36 y.o. whether your an ou fan or not these guys are 21 and 19. to me these ARE kids. this is not a football issue it's a personal responsiblity issue. how can you justify this type of slander to a persons reputation. this dumb*** should be prosecuted to the fullest extent and i hope he gets his a** sued off.
It is quite evident that every team has their idiot fans. But when all is said and done, why put money in lawyers pockets over something like this. Yes, the guy was out of line. And whoever on this post said that sometimes sorry just doesn't cut it is right on the money. But isn't there a better way to make a point here and maybe have someone else benefit from it through community service. Is this really something to dig in deep pockets (which was an arrogant statement to make) over? Some on here have said...well you must not have kids, or you would think differently if it was you. I disagree. Would I be angry if it were my kid or if it were me? Absolutely!! But the response of the OU players and their families can speak louder than any lawsuit can. Just my humble opinion.
The Falwell case is no problem here . . . it pretty much just applied the actual malice standard to intentional infliction of emotional distress cases.
In a nutshell, the plaintiffs knew they couldn't show the actual malice that would be required for defamation, so they tried IIED. The Supreme Court said 'nice try,' but IIED also requires actual malice. Plus, the Hustler ad was a clear parody, which is protected speech.
That being said, I think the players could show that the author made the statement with the knowledge it was false . . . so they could probably win.
ya'll need to grow up and let the players and news people involved handle this through their legal teams and not use this as a springboard to hammer each other's team

Sometimes a lawsuit is the only thing that will get someone's attention. I don't know if it's the right thing in this particular situation, but it might be the only thing that this guy understands. BOOMER SOONER
None of Your's has left me conflicted as to whether or not these boys are able to take legal actions (read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hustler_Magazine_v._Falwell).
To all the Nebraska fans, Pellini is the answer. You will be back. Now, if the Big XII could just move the conference championship to Phoenix...... Boomer Sooner!
Ash--Sorry, I wasn't trying to say you were wrong, just suggesting that if you are right (which I think you are), his potential legal issues are not over.
If you see someone wearing colors other than crimson and cream, they probably went to that college, if you see someone wearing crimson and cream, they probably went to Wal-Mart.
Anyone remember Hustler Magazine, Inc. v. Falwell, 485 U.S. 46 (1988)? This passes the Supreme Court test of "outrageousness."
My comment had nothing to do with the rights of DOK. It related directly and exclusively to the rights of the players to sue the author for defamation, and the interplay with the actual malice hurdle presented by the 1st Amendment.
Aaron, the 1st Amendment applies to even civil defamation actions against certain people, including public figures like Bradford - neither need be a state actor. Because of the protections of the 1st Amendment, the players will need to show "actual malice" - it's not a catagorical bar to recovery.
You know It's pathetic to read some of these comments on here. The topic is about one man who did something very bad against two outstanding young men. It didn't take long before some morons took it to another level and now is fan against fan, school against school. When is society going to grow up? This situation has nothing to do with any of us. Keep the comments on the subject. The fans of Nebraska, OSU, Texas, OU or any other school had anything to do with this man's action! Grow up people and quit pointing fingers.
good morning all. someone earlier int this post stated that the 1st amendment covers this guy. unfortunately i must disagree. the 1st ammendment only protect the citizens of the United States from actions taken by the government against one's public speaches or sayings. this is a civil matter first and foremost.
I am an ou fan and no i dont agree with what this gentlemen said. however, the fact that he did man up and apologize does show a little bit of class and integrity on his part. Yet its up to the young men, Mr Bradford and Mr Jones, to actually handle this situation. I hope they take the time to evaluate the situation and find out what is best for them and mr condradt.
Thanks from another OU fan, JR, as I hope I would write as fine a piece if the situation were reversed. I have little to add, but I think most real football fans know that the NU football fans are among the best and this incident won't change that. Boomer Sooner!
Mary .. just get ovver it .. if your player does the crime he will be reported and do the time. Just as our OU players will too.. so jump off the pity barge and move on.
JR OF NU , thank you for such a nice commment. I truly believe there are jerks everywhere playing for every team and supporting every yeam. Yes, we too, have bad fans as well, for instance the one OU fan who dang near ripped the balls off a Texas fan here in our city. Each team has these and its a shame that the entire team/city is punished for one persons actions. I, too, have always enjoyed the good rivalry that we once had with NU and the feelings of upcoming games with you guys.. in the past it was a big deal and I think alot of people dont remember that. Texas is our rivalry for now.. but we await your return to a big showdown one day. Thanks for the upstanding comments ... and GO OU !!!
Conradt should personally apologize to the players and parents....come on...thats the problem with the country today....."IT WILL BE OK IF I SAY SOMETHING THEN APOLOGIZE FOR SAYING IT".
Is Mary(the rabid OSU fan)ripping JR? Mary the NU vs OSU record is 36-5-1, 5 national titles, and number 4 on the list of all time wins. Mary, why don't you get a football team? signed, An OU fan.
I'm a big time OU fan and I think it's kind of funny. I mean are you serious, prosecute the guy for playing a joke. Get over it. Obviously anyone with half a brain could tell that it was a joke. Yeah, it was a joke that crossed the line per se, but give me a break!
Mary--You're an idiot! Thank you for demonstrating the attitude that opposing teams are starting to associate the rest of OU's faithful and respectful fans with! To top it all off, to compare Nebraska's recent lack of success with the pre-Bill Snyder years just goes to show your lack of knowledge for the game. Stop embarrassing yourself and stop posting!
JR--Thank you for your apology and can't wait for the OU/Nebraska rivalry to be rekindled. I have the utmost respect for you and your fans, ranking them in a tie for courteousness and knowledge of the game with the Alabama fans.
Thank you JR. I agree 100%. I've always had respect for NU and it's fans. They show class in win or loss. This is an "exception to the rule". I'm sure OU has it's rogue fans too. This isn't parody either. It's only parody if the statement is so rediculous that an average person couldn't possibly see it as fact. Not the case here. This was slanderous at its core.
JR, Nebraska is so far down the Big XII Football food chain that nobody cares! You couldn't even stay on the field with OSU at home last year! Dare I mention Nebraska in the same breath as pre Bill Snyder Kansas State??? You want to talk football, get a football team!
I agree with Mitzi "This is much more than someone just being "hurtful", and people "getting their panties in a wad over nothing". This is malicious slander AND libel, with malice aforethought. It doesn't matter WHAT team anyone belongs to, that's what this is. Everyone needs to take of their team's "rose colored glasses" and call it what it is-slander and libel."
