NICHOLS HILLS — Kite Park reopened with new trees, grass, walking trails and a complete drainage system.
The 79-year-old park was landscaped and refurbished with private donations raised by City Councilman Peter Hoffman Jr., who started the project in December.
Nancy Herzel, treasurer of Nichols Hills Parks Inc. and an organizer of the reopening ceremony Saturday, said new lighting and a refurbished gazebo add to the park's beauty.
"The park is incredible,” Herzel said. "It's an absolute premiere park, and what Peter did is just great.”
More than 100 trees and plants have been planted, along with new sod on the ground. Walking and jogging paths were built.
More than 100 people in Nichols Hills contributed to the park project.
"What is important about this whole project is what Peter has accomplished,” Herzel said.
Hoffman said money also has been raised to maintain the park in the future.
More than $807,000 was raised to work on the park, he said.
The cost of the renovation was $690,000.
Hoffman said money is still being raised for future upkeep.
The park was damaged by December ice storms and a number of trees had to be removed after the storms — only days after Hoffman announced plans to refurbish the park.
"I want to thank everybody for their contributions and their help,” Hoffman said. "It will hopefully be a treasure for many years to come.”
