Kelly not pleased with OU after pro day

NORMAN — Former Oklahoma wide receiver Malcolm Kelly didn't have the pro day performance Wednesday that he wanted.

And he's putting some of the blame on OU.

Kelly, who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.68 seconds, said he wasn't told by the OU strength staff until this morning that the location of the pro day had been moved from Astroturf in the Mosier Center to field turf inside the Everest Indoor Training Center.

OU strength and conditioning coach Jerry Schmidt said the location had been changed Wednesday morning at the request of the NFL scouts, who felt the field turf at the Everest Center would be closer to the surface run on at the NFL Scouting Combine.

"I had everything set up for where I wanted to do it at," Kelly said. "I get up here this morning and it's a whole different deal. This is my life. It's got to do with me and my family. This is what I do, play football, and I'm supposed to run as fast as I can. I was slipping all over the place during my drill work. I can't say I'm pleased with anything today."

Kelly said he had been preparing for the last month to test on Astroturf and was running the 40 in under 4.5 seconds on that surface.

"People want to say surface is surface, but it's a lot more to it than that," Kelly said. "You have to think about how much ground time you have running on this mushy surface here and how much ground time you have on Astroturf.

"Just a little bit of time could mean a whole lot of draft money."

Kelly, who measured in at 6-foot-4 and 227 pounds, reached 32 inches in the vertical jump and 9 feet, 9 inches in the long jump. He posted times of 4.24 in the short shuttle and 7.00 in the three-cone drill.

Kelly looked sharp running routes and catching the ball during receiver drills.

He is flying to Cincinnati to meet with Bengals personnel later today.

Bengals offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski was among the more than 30 coaches and scouts who attended OU's second pro day, which included former Sooner defensive back Reggie Smith, tight end Joe Jon Finley and cornerback Marcus Walker.

Phillip...You are forgiven. But I have to say the Bengals don't need anymore problems either. Since I don't like the Steelers...maybe he could go there? LOL But perhaps Kelly will mature. I see someone talked him into apologizing. Good start.

Phillip, No soapbox here just stating what I believe! If that is standing on a soapbox then so be it! Jesus came to give man forgiveness not hate and unforgiveness as is being passed out on this forum. I stand for what I believe in with all that is within me. Jesus paid the price for all our sins including unforgiveness. When we read about this stuff we need to pray for all that show unforgiveness and I do each and everyday. I am not saying perfect because I am not. The bible says that "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." All I am saying is there is no one perfect in this world no not one. Our Roman ancestors crucified the perfect one over 2000 years ago. Read the story of Jesus in the new testament of the bible. There are 4 books that are dedicated to informing us about the life of Jesus Christ here on earth and all that he did and what he said about life, health, death and eternal life. They are called the 4 Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. When you have read them then you might understand the points I have tried to make. If you do not that is your choice. I cannot make you believe. I have tried unbelief, it doesn't work.

Jerry...Not certain what you've read into these comments, but I'm certainly hoping that you decend from our soapbox (or is that lecturn) asap...I've not selected one spike nor have any of us been shopping for the correct size of crucix for Malcolm. You defend him by telling us he's young & will make errors...yes, he must be 19 or 20 now anyway, and just thinking how many young people at that age are making huge contributions in our military and at home, many of which are life changing. We all make errors, no question. His consequences minor in comparison. Let's all move on...

Here's food for thought. Could it be that Malcolm's latest behavioral misstep is a reflection on the attitudes of alot of the fans who follow Oklahoma football? We have here a talented player here who did some good things at Oklahoma while he played here yet alot of fans are ready to crucify him for a behavioral misstep. Alot of you need to grow up. Malcolm does too. He is not the first athlete to blame coaches for something he himself should have prepared himself for. Everyone needs to remember these are still young people and they will not always do or act as we think they should act. As far as consequences for his actions, Malcolm has already started to reap consequences for his action. We do reap what we sew. I am a loyal sooner fan and will be until I am gone from this earth. I have followed the Sooners for 42 years. I do not live in Oklahoma anymore but I am still a loyal Sooner fan. Last season is representative of reality in life. The unexpected happens and we have to be prepared for those moments. If we are not then losing a game or something a lot worse can happen. Malcolm will learn from his mistake. If he does not then his career in pro football will be very short.

Time for the coaches to take the kidgloves off & the "bonus boys" to begin acting as adults. Let's allow some of the "lesser known" guys take center stage. They've shown the heart it takes to be great. In my book, I'll take that heart over anything Kelly has shown..

Here's a reach: a friend who is a friend of an NFL scout says that MK's post-workout whining has already raised hackles in his organization and that the letter MK's agent sent out last week denying MK was hurt is now seen as part of a pattern. Not even drafted and MK is labeled as a malcontent. What a shame, but it appears to be justified.

If Malcolm is not embarrassed by his outburst then something is wrong with him. Even if his rant is based on fact, which I doubt, he should have acted in a more gentlemanly fashion. If the University staff was so horrid to him why didn't he move on years ago?

Malcolm sure looked alot better when Paul Thompson - no disrespect intended - was trying to get it into the same zip code as Kelly. I think his real beef started when he realized that Bradford had a capable arm & he could share the wealth, not just have every jump ball thrown his way. WHAT a CRY BABY! My family attended a few away games, but not all. During everyone of those games announcer always said well you can tell that play isnt for Kelly, he just jogged through the route or he is just standing there watching the action.

Jerry-I'm finding it hard to understand how one's religious beliefs pertain to this kid's potential to succeed at the next level. Have you not been paying attention to what the NFL's new commish has been doing to those who "make mistakes"? The reason for people putting so much emphasis on Kelley's behavior is in large part due to the punishments handed out by Goodell, which directly affect not only the player, but their whole team. Besides, it's hard to forgive somebody who is unapologetic. When interviewed following his dispute with Coach Schmidt, he showed no signs of remorse and continued to place blame on others. If/when Kelley apologizes for his absurd behavior then, and only then, can we talk about forgiving him.

It's too easy to condemn people for their faults. There is too much of that going on in the world today and unfortunantly too much of that going on in people's homes! The children are suffering because we see them act out their anger because they were never taught how to handle the unexpected! Today's society only teaches hate in the public media while love gets back page! There are positives in every situation in life we just need to learn how to see those positives when everything within us says no way. There is a way it is called faith in God.

No I did not but I know he is still a young man and we all make mistakes. It is not up to us to judge what the future will bring. I know this, he must have done something right because two pro teams are looking at him so they see some potential in him. I also know this things are not always as they appear to be. Don't judge a book by it's cover. People make mistakes that is certainty. If we can't forgive people of their mistakes then what kind of people are we? I believe that we are a compassionate people who have forgotten how to forgive because we let our flesh get in the way and do not want to see the truth.

I am looking at what was reported: Malcolm Kelley said "He couldn't say he was happy with any thing today." The question I have is:How is that being mad at OU? Besides potential Pro football players understand that they need to be prepared to perform their best on any type of field. If Malcolm Kelley did not prepare for this that is his own fault and needs to accept that. Besides it is up to the NFL scouts where they want to hold the tryouts anyway. All I know is this: The only things certain in life are uncertainty, life, death, God, Bible, Devil and sin. We are the ones who determine whether we will succeed or fail in life.

Malcom was a very good college player. I don't think he was ready to go pro, but obviously he was more interested in money - and money up front. If he drops in the draft it is because he was not ready, and his big mouth. Let this be a lesson to others - finish school, get a degree because you might not make it in the pros. If Malcom makes it, he can still earn millions if he performs. I doubt his whole career will be based on his time on one sprint no matter what surface it was. I hope you make it, but don't blame anyone or anything else if you don't - it was YOUR choice to leave early, and your choice to run late.

Very nice point, although, with the millions of $s at stake, shouldn't he have brought an extra pair of shoes just in case? Maybe he is just holding out for that Nike contract before making such a purchase. Nike commercial idea, show the video of Kelley running this slow time in un-named shoes then running a much faster time in a pair of Nike's. Maybe Kelley is smarter than we all give him credit for. I'm not saying that he hadn't been use to the surface. When they do training for the combine, pro days, etc. They only train specifically for the test and surface. So they run on the same surface, they train specifically for the 40, long jump, vertical and so on. So if you specifically trained for something, and then when you come to run, it was different, you wouldn't be as prepared as normal. A better analogy is playing baseball and hitting with aluminum bats all year, and showing up for a tournament in which they only allow wood bats. This actually happened to me back in the day. You are still hitting a baseball with a bat, but you definitely aren't as prepared to function with the difference.

Jeremy-Having read your chapter 8 vs. chapter 9 analogy, I believe I speak for everybody when I ask, "WHAT?!?" Maybe I'm mistaken but I was under the impression that Kelley had previously practiced on this surface during his career at OU. In which case, he should have been familiar with the surface, thus making your exam scenario completely illogical at best.

He needs to not whine. No on likes whiners plus you play on a different surface every week in football. So saying that he has prepared for a month for one surface and got another is not as relevant as he would like the general public to think. He should be prepared for all surfaces. Life is about adapting to changes. He is old enough to understand that and not blame the University of Oklahoma for that. If not for OU he might not be where he is today. He just needs to be grateful for the opportunity.

J of OKC. Good lord. How can you equate Kelly's short 22 or so years thus far as having worked his whole life and not being set up to succeed. Give me a freakin break. Most of us posting here have in fact worked a lifetime and have had many disapointment. What we wouldn't give for the tough times Kelly is facing.

J-OKC,
Only a limp d--- would inject politics into this situation. Kelly is a whiner and so are you. He had the advantage of testing at the place he played at for 3-years. No excuses. He and you sound like typical spoiled brats, with no brains.

Jeremy - not that it matters but if you have to have an MRI to diagnosis a quad tear, than it is a very microscopic tear. When you tear a quad it feels like a little marble is under the skin. FYI...

Malcolm - you're welcome for the 3 years of superior coaching and sharpening of your skills, knowledge, and athletic ability. I'm sure Jerry Schmidt, etc. appreciate your acknowledgement that you wouldn't be looking at millions of dollars without their help. You're also welcome for the 3+ years use of the athletic facilities, media outlets, and the football program in general in getting your name on ESPN.

Oh good lord Malcolm, shut up and quit whining! "Just a little bit of time could mean a whole lot of draft money." Not like you're not gonna get enough money in the NFL anyways, huh? That's what's wrong with some pro athletes - chasing after the almighty dollar. It makes me sick. Don't let the door hit you on the way out of Oklahoma, Kelly! That kind of attitude is what gave us the wonderful performance in Phoenix back in January, d-bag.

It shows how much you some are uninformed. Malcom didn't have a thigh bruise, it was a quadricep tear that was misdiagnosed which was found by MRI. Also, he has only had about 3 weeks to train for this running, and all were spent training on astro-turf in Atlanta based on his assumption of running on turf here. OU utilized this approach for when we go to away games. Practice on field turf for away turf games, grass for away grass fields. I guess if you studied for an exam on chapter 8, and then they decided to give you chapter 9 and you were upset, you are a cry baby. I do believe he should have been more professional in his handling of the situation.

J-OKC. I would love to have the talent Kelly has and be in the same situation. But no such luck for me. I don't have the luxury of having an athletic pedigree that allows me to whine and still make millions. Pleeeeze put a a lid on the sympathty for Kelly.

I have no doubt that it was disappointing to Kelly that he did not test under the conditions he prepared. It can be true that a bad test can cost a player a few spots in the draft, but it can also be true that a player that may be perceived as a potential problem child could fall as many spots or more. Kelly has been prepping for draft day for a long time now, likely back into high school or before. I am not suggesting Kelly is a problem child - I don't know him. Bad press (and this story is bad press)can hurt a young player. Cincinnati, I can imagine, isn't interested in another prima donna. They have one of those. This situation probably could have been handled differently (not via the press). This has to be a time of anxiety for draft hopefuls, and I would guess that was the basis of his reaction. I think that Kelly's work at OU speaks for itself. He really need say nothing more. I wish him the best.

OK; let me button up my shirt before my heart falls out for this guy! Any of you that think it's unfair to Kelly will always rely on excuses....Perhaps most of you know what making excuses develops...lol. The rest of you: Yup, a one or two star can shine just as bright & has certainly earned the priviledge to play. Take a close look at the walk ons....Now those men are to be applauded!

I really don't think OU will miss MK much. He really didn't play hard on every play. I just wonder when they made the change and how much time he would have had too get ready for the other surface. His negative outburst could keep a good recruit from coming. But I'm with Jeff from Jenks, It's his hands that everybody wants.

I guess people who bought all those #4 Oklahoma jerseys can only wear them on astroturf...Man up Malcolm!!! MK has incredible hands. I lost count of how many times a pass looked out of reach but he would managed to grab it. His hands will be what gets him into the NFL. Just look at all the dropped balls that Terrell Owens has. I just hope his whining will not affect where he goes...

Okay Kelly, I guess we can just tell the Pros they'll have to make every effort to schedule their games on Astroturf so you can shine in the Pro games. Maybe the NFL scouts need to consider you can only handle one type of surface, then they can platoon you with another reciever. Or better yet, they could just draft a guy who can run on any surface and doesn't look to blame everyone and everything for his shortcomings. Stop griping. Only find your faults and correct them.

I just didn't see kelly giving all that much effort. All too interested in jumping to the pros to risk much. How does a team build character, good chemistry and a championship team with so many jumping ship so often. Our 2000 team had fewer stars but won it all. just my opinion.

MK made PT and SB look better than they actually were. Then MK disappeared halfway throught the season, and SB still looked good. I'll take guys who work hard like Iglesias and Johnson over more talented athletes like MK anyday. I think their quarterback will to. It sounds like MK will fit in perfectly with Cincinatti.

I share the mild frustrations that many Sooner fans have had about Malcolm on his attitude at times but I can understand him on this issue. It is a big deal. Every detail should have been set in advance and kept constant. OU benefits in recruiting exposure by having Kelly go as high as possible. However, I would advise Malcolm not to stay anything else negative or NFL teams might question his character. Malcolm needs to tell teams it wasn't a true measure of his speed and he is willing to run for them anytime. Good luck Malcolm. OU fans should want every former Sooner in the NFL speaking highly of the staff and the program.
