STILLWATER — Southern Mississippi has scheduled a press conference on Wednesday to announce Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Larry Fedora as its head coach, according to sources.

Fedora, 45, replaces Jeff Bower, who was forced to resign two weeks ago. Fedora has been viewed as the leading candidate since he first interviewed with USM athletic director Richard Giannini on Dec. 4. Fedora flew to Hattiesburg for a second interview last Friday.

The primary issue in negotiations was Fedora wanted the Golden Eagles to commit $1.2 million combined for his assistant coaches. Bower's staff this season made $800,000. Sources could not confirm whether USM officials met Fedora's demands.

Fedora is expected to begin recruiting immediately at Southern Mississippi. Giannini has announced Bower will coach Southern Mississippi in the Papajohns.com bowl Dec. 22 against Cincinnati.

Good Luck in Conference USA Larry. Thanks for all that you have done at OSU.

what meltdown are you talking about? When was the last OSU coach to leave? Bedford and he was fired. OSU is one of the highest paying assistant coaching schools in the country. Maybe your thinking of the Bob Simmon days.

A few years ago everyone was on the dump Fedora bandwagon. Now we get comments about dump Gundy to keep Fedora. Who hired Fedora? Gundy should be recognized for making a good hire as you would expect a HEAD coach to do. Now its his job to find a quality replacement. Bill Snyder continually lost assistants and eventually could not keep the team at a high level. Bob Stoops has lost assistants and yet the team rolls on. What is the answer for OSU? High assistant salaries and guaranteed contracts won't keep an assistant from accepting a job (even in Conf USA) if the salary doubles. Good assistants want to be head coaches. If we have the athletes (not 1 and 2 star recruits but 3-4-5 star recruits) then whoever we have plugged in as assistant coaches will have a chance to be successful.

I agree Bill, but OSU needs to find a way to keep good coaches. I would be okay with making Fedora the head coach and sending Gundy to USM.

I am pleased OSU has coaches good enough for other schools to be interested in. I wish OSU had been interested in Fedora as head coach. He has done a tremendous job in making OSU an outstanding offensive team.

Meltdown? Would you rather OSU had assistant coaches no one was interested in?

And the melt down continues. The inability to maintain stability in the coaching staff will continue to produce 6-6 seasons. Guess we'll surrender another bowl win as well as potential recruits.
