•Founded: 1998.

•Key product: The Worx Co. provides Web design and hosting, as well as customized software for its clients.

•Background: The Worx Co. has evolved into the company it is today from two earlier prototypes, co-owner Sue Vanderwater said. The company made a first appearance as "Cyberworx,” a small videogaming cafe in the shopping center at Northwest Expressway and Council Road.

"It was a popular haunt for teens to play video games in a ‘network' environment, a rare opportunity in those years,” Vanderwater said.

However, soon the opportunity to become involved in installing computer networks surfaced, causing the company to change its name to "PC Worx.”

By 1998 PC Worx became focused on development of Web sites for clients, including intranets, E-commerce, customized applications within Web sites, search engine marketing, and all aspects of web services.

The company was purchased by Meridian Data Systems in August 2004.

Today, the Worx Co. draws on the strength of its parent company, Meridian Data Systems, which offers full-scale database development, and a sister company, Hosts of America, which offers affordable hosting to clients worldwide.

The Worx employs graphic artists and designers, as well as programmers, Vanderwater said.

"Wireless video is becoming more important to clients each day,” she said. "The Worx does create products specific to these wireless devices such as the iPhone upon demand. The creative skills of The Worx combined with Hosts of America make it possible for the company to both create the application as well as host it.”

The Worx also offers a free "Lunch and Learn” session each Wednesday for companies wanting to learn more about its services.

"This is a time to be our guest for lunch and ask questions about the Web or your company's particular needs with regard to your Web site,” Vanderwater said.
