Now a backup at cornerback, after opening the spring at safety, Franks intercepted two passes and showed his speed on one of the offensive highlights of the scrimmage.
Running back DeMarco Murray, one of the fastest Sooners, broke a run outside and seemed headed for a touchdown down the left sideline. But Franks tracked Murray down and forced him out of bounds, ending the gain at 55 yards, yet shy of a touchdown. Franks did have a slight angle on the play, but not one that would benefit most players.
•Baby steps: Sooners coach Bob Stoops said he's willing to wait for a leader to emerge in the quarterback derby.
He's also looking for some help to develop Sam Bradford, Joey Halzle and Keith Nichol.
"They're just learning,” Stoops said. "They'll only keep getting better. I think the biggest factor is the players around them need to play better. We have so many guys back, that if they'll step it up, it'll make it easier for those quarterbacks.”
