OU recruiting notes

Published: February 7, 2007

• Last-minute plans: Bobby Jack Wright's diligent recruiting effort provided OU with a bonus to this class, a Tuesday switch in commitment by four-star linebacker Travis Lewis from Nebraska to the Sooners.

Are there any more surprises in store for the Sooners? Maybe not surprises, not unless Ryan Broyles swings back — again — to his boyhood favorite. But OU is still seriously in play with defensive end Frank Alexander of Baton Rouge.

• Showstopper: Keith Nichol may have yet to take the dance floor at his senior prom, but he's talented and heady enough to make a serious run at OU's starting quarterback spot.

• Instant impact: With linebackers Rufus Alexander and Zach Latimer moving on, the Sooners will turn to junior-college transfer Mike Reed to provide immediate production and leadership. The No. 2-ranked juco prospect overall by Rivals.com, Reed is a hoss at 6-4, 245.

• Hidden gem: Lawton MacArthur's David Anderson was a late add to this class. And an unheralded one. But Anderson may be a late bloomer. He's still growing into his 6-5 frame, as well as the game. Speed, however, he's got as a state contender in the high hurdles.

Under the radar: The recruitment of Vian's Londell Taylor was a stunner. But coaches like his athletic ability. He caught 46 passes for 1,171 yards and 16 touchdowns on offense, while intercepting seven passes — returning four for TDs — on defense.

Mr. Productive: Austin Box hitched his Enid teammates to his backside and carried them to the Class 6A title game. Despite suffering a dislocated elbow early in the season, Box was a two-way star at quarterback and in the secondary.

• Be patient: Anderson needs to add weight and hone his skills at the position, so don't expect him to be pushing for a role in the rotation too soon.
