OU recruiting Q&A

Published: February 5, 2007

How did Oklahoma make use of the last recruiting visit weekend before Wednesday's signing day?

The Sooners went to work on the class of 2008, hosting a number of top junior prospects.

That doesn't mean OU coaches are finished wooing potential recruits for this class. They're still working on a few prospects, maybe even a surprise or two. But in a year in which the Sooners have fewer scholarships to give, most of their targets had already visited. And now's the time to get a jump on 2008, which OU did, getting a key commitment from Gilmer, Texas, running back Justin Johnson, who might just be the top-rated runner in the Lone Star state a year from now.

Where will Reggie Smith play in 2007?

Smith wants to play at cornerback. And OU coaches want him there.

But, as was the case last fall, Smith's place of work next year will likely be decided by the play — or lack of play — at strong safety.

Smith was the Sooners' best corner in '06, but a shift to strong safety became a necessity to shore up a weak spot.

Look for Smith to open spring drills at corner, while youngsters Keenan Clayton and Quinton Carter battle to prove they belong in the lineup at strong safety.

How many Sooners will be in Indianapolis for the NFL Combine Feb. 21-27?

Four — all from defense. Ends C.J. Ah You and Larry Birdine, and linebackers Rufus Alexander and Zach Latimer were the only OU players issued invitations.

Notable omissions: offensive tackle Chris Messner, defensive end Calvin Thibodeaux and quarterback/wide receiver Paul Thompson.

Adrian Peterson, as an outgoing junior, is not eligible.
