After struggling early, Venables has Sooners' defense thriving

SCOTTSDALE , Ariz. — Not long ago, radio lines and message boards hummed with frustrated Oklahoma faithful venting about Brent Venables .

The proud Sooners ranked 97th nationally in total defense. That after surrendering the seventh-worst statistical day of the Bob Stoops era — 501 yards — at Oregon . Fans were frantic.
