KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The
Big 12 gives no MVP award for its championship game.
No matter Saturday night.
Everyone knew it was
Malcolm Kelly anyway.
The
Oklahoma receiver caught 10 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns in the
Sooners' 21-7 victory against Nebraska. He broke the championship game record for receiving yards and became the first OU player to ever have more than 10 catches twice in a season.
"We thought coverage-wise he would get some opportunities," OU offensive coordinator
Kevin Wilson said. "We weren't necessarily going to him."
It only looked that way.
Kelly made all the tough catches. All the timely ones, too.
With the
Sooners already leading 7-0,
Kelly broke free of the Huskers' coverage and snagged a deep pass for a 66-yard touchdown. It gave the
Sooners momentum that they rode the rest of the first half.
Then with the Huskers' defense threatening to make a game of it in the second half,
Kelly had a 99-yard-drive-capping touchdown that should make all the highlight films. He leapt in the far corner of the end zone and managed to not only snare
Paul Thompson's pass but also drag his left toe in bounds.
"I really didn't know if I had stayed in," Kelly said. "Just so happened I got one foot down."
OU coach
Bob Stoops said, "Malcolm's a big target. He can go up and get the ball, and Paul knows that."
Kelly's big day highlighted a 265-yard passing performance by the Sooner offense.
"We went in ready to throw the ball a good amount," Stoops said. "We felt the way they would try to defend us it would be there."
