CHOCTAW -- Classes at Choctaw High School were canceled today after school officials received information about a possible bomb threat.

A student at the school turned in a note to school officials Monday afternoon, Choctaw Police Chief Billy Carter said at a Tuesday morning press conference.

The note stated that someone at the school was planning on bringing a bomb or gun to the school, Carter said.

Carter said police were not notified about the note until this morning, when the department’s campus resource officer arrived at the school.

After conferring with Superintendent Jim McCharren, officials decided to cancel classes at the high school.

Students were either turned away as they arrived or were sent back home on school buses.

Carter said no other schools were affected.

He said investigators have searched the school and have not discovered any explosive devices. He said several students were being interviewed, including the student who turned in the note.

It has not been determined if the threat is credible, Carter said. The chief said security at the school will be tight when students return Monday from the Thanksgiving holiday. More than 1,000 students attend classes at the school.
