Peterson fills new role
Relegated to the sidelines with his collarbone broken and his arm in a sling, Adrian Peterson's role changed Saturday night.

The man they call "All Day" became All Coach.

"He kept coming up to me and telling me certain things I needed to do, things he saw that I couldn't see," starting tailback Allen Patrick said.

"Like, I was trying to cut the ball inside and he said, ‘Go outside, it's there, it's there.' So we started working towards that, going outside, and things started happening. He's a good guy and I appreciate the things he do for me."

Patrick had 35 carries for 110 yards in Peterson's place.

Peterson was the last Sooner back to carry the ball more than 35 times. He had 36 attempts against Kansas State in 2004.

Kelly closing in: OU receiver Malcolm Kelly finished the night with seven receptions for 64 yards and now has 995 receiving yards in his 18-game career.

He ranks 22nd on OU's all-time receiving chart.

• Ball control: The Sooners turned the ball over once in the game and ran a season-high 75 offensive plays.

OU possessed the ball for 36 minutes, 44 seconds in the game, including more than 21 minutes in the second half.

Just chillin': The near-freezing weather led to the smallest crowd of the season and drove several home early.

The upper decks and the student section were sparsely populated by the middle of the third quarter, though the Sooners led just 10-0.

Despite the weather, the paid attendance of 84,443 was still the third-highest of the season for OU, ahead of the Middle Tennessee State and Iowa State games.

The temperature at kickoff was 46 degrees, the coldest at the start of an OU game since the Sooners faced Kansas State in the 2003 Big 12 Championship game in Kansas City, Mo., on a 39-degree night.

• Brown out: True freshman running back Chris Brown was brought out of redshirt Saturday night to help fill the void of Peterson.

Kevin Wilson said Brown earned the playing time with a strong week of practice.

"Some of the coaches will tell you (true freshman) Mossis Madu is playing as well as any freshman, but Chris Brown had the best week of practice," Wilson said.

"We just had a little more confidence with him."

Brown's first appearance came midway through the fourth quarter, though he didn't get a carry until the final two minutes.

He scored on a 4-yard run with 17 seconds left.

• Onside: For the first time this season, OU was credited with the recovery of an opponent's onside kick.

Two other teams have successfully maintained possession on an onside kick against the Sooners.

Washington recovered an onside try on Sept. 9 and then there was the Sept. 16 fiasco at Oregon.

• No pass: Colorado finished with 39 passing yards, the lowest total allowed by OU since giving up just 32 to Texas A&M in the 77-0 win in 2003.

Colorado quarterback Bernard Jackson was 3-of-14 through the air Saturday night.

"We didn't expect them to blitz as much as they did," Jackson said. "It kind of threw us off a little bit."

Colorado coach Dan Hawkins wasn't so subtle.

"Obviously, we got dominated on offense," he said.
