Patrick, a junior from Conway, S.C., has been Adrian Peterson's backup this season but has not distinguished himself, other than a couple of fumbles against Middle Tennessee.
Gutierrez, a junior from San Antonio, has been third-string this season but is the more proven runner. Gutierrez filled in for Peterson against Baylor last season and rushed for 173 yards on 30 carries.
That's reason enough; this is even more reason: Gutierrez is the most respected player on the team.
Gutierrez has won citizenship awards for his volunteerism, and OU officials rave about his character.
In times of trouble, leaning on people you can trust comes in mighty handy.
The OU coaches showed that by handing the quarterback reins to Paul Thompson when the Rhett Bomar scandal brokel. Following the same script would serve the Sooners well now.
