Stoops says he doesn't know if penalty fits the situation

NORMAN — Bob Stoops responded to the Pac-10 apology and punishment of the officiating crew from Saturday's controversial loss at Oregon with a question:

That's it?

Admitting officiating errors "altered the outcome" of Oregon's 34-33 win over Oklahoma, the Pac-10 Conference on Monday announced one-game suspensions for the officiating crew and instant replay officials involved in two controversial decisions in the final 72 seconds.

Stoops measured that against the weight of a loss — one that could severely hamper the Sooners' national championship hopes — and failed to find the equity.

"I think it's fair to say a one-game suspension, compared to how our season is altered¦ I don't know if that fits that situation," an intense Stoops said.

The Pac-10 acknowledged two late officiating errors, including awarding possession of an onside kick to Oregon with 1:06 to play.

"It isn't like there was 10 minutes left," Stoops said. "We're taking a knee. Game's over.

"I'm not saying we didn't have our fault in it, that we could be better. But that's the end of the game. And there's no refuting that."

The Sooners coach seemed to take particular aim at replay official Gordon Riese, who could have changed the calls from the booth.

"I'm not talking about people who are in the heat of the moment, out there amid all the chaos," Stoops said.

"I'm talking about people, who like every viewer at home, had an opportunity to see it. I find it still absolutely inexcusable and unacceptable."

Stoops also made an appeal for accountability.

"I've got a 19-year-old kid, who's out there in front of the whole country and out there in front of 60,000 people who makes a mistake and gives up a play at the end, he's got to talk to everybody," Stoops said. "He's a man, walks in the tunnel, talks to everyone and explains himself.

"All parties involved should have to explain their actions."
