Half of Oklahoma’s starting secondary was replaced during the first two quarters.
Holmes for Wolfe: Junior cornerback D.J. Wolfe, who gave up two big pass plays last week and already was playing for his life, was burned late in the first half. He was promptly replaced by sophomore Lendy Holmes.
Carter for Clayton: Washington running back Kenny James ran through the tackle attempt of redshirt freshman strong safety Keenan Clayton on Washington’s first offensive snap. James continued on to a 54-yard touchdown.
Clayton played sporadically the rest of the half, sharing time with senior Jason Carter. Carter finished with a career-high six tackles, but dropped a pair of potential interceptions. He also blocked a punt.
“I got great expectations for this season,” Carter said. “Had to try to come out and do the best that I could.”
Carter was the starting strong safety in spring practice, but was replaced by Clayton early in fall two-a-days.
Both Carter and Holmes started and played exclusively in the second half.
Stoops did not say who would start at those two positions next week.
