Photographer Mary Jane Alexander is looking for Oklahoma's oldest living residents to honor them with photo portraits as part of the 2007 state centennial celebration.

She is halfway to her goal of creating 100 portraits of Oklahomans born during or before 1907.

Her photo essay, "Salt of the Red Earth: Oklahoma Centenarians," is an official project of the Oklahoma Centennial Commission and is endorsed by the Centenarian Club of Oklahoma.

"It's humbling to be able to meet so many folks who have helped make Oklahoma what it is today," Alexander said. "So far, I have 51. Most are quiet heroes who have received little recognition for their day-to-day contributions."

Alexander said she wants to find the oldest living Oklahoman.

She plans to interview and take photos of an Ardmore woman who will be 109 in December, Alexander said.

"If there are other Oklahomans who have lived in three centuries, I would love to be able to include them in the project," she said.

To nominate a centenarian for the project, call Alexander at 694-7550 or e-mail inkfactory@cox.net.
