EDMOND - Members of the Edmond Centennial Commission are ready to go on the speaking trail to promote the plans for local activities for the state's 100th birthday.
The commission wants to speak with local groups and organizations about the plans for the yearlong celebration.
Brenda Lyons, Edmond's associate superintendent of schools, said a 15-minute presentation has been created and brochures explaining the commission's projects are available for members to present to the public.
Lyons is the chairman of the commission's community promotions sub-committee.
To schedule a program, call Lyons at 340-2823.
At a meeting Monday, commission members agreed to sell two sizes of bricks that will be included in a centennial design at Festival Market Place. Bricks will cost $35 for the smaller size, and $100 for the larger ones.
Those purchasing bricks can have their names or business logos inscribed on the bricks, said Kay Dell Story, chairman of the commission's brick sub-committee.
In other business, the commission voted to extend the Edmond Route 66 project outside the city limits to Memorial Park Cemetery at Broadway Avenue and Kelley.
Edmond's portion of the route begins at the east city limits at State Highway 66 and Hiwassee Road and goes west through Arcadia to Second Street and then south on Broadway Avenue to the cemetery.
Preliminary plans are to install new Historic Route 66 signs, add route markings on the highway, create a travel brochure and add red granite historical markers along the route.
The proposed project comes with an estimated price tag of almost $80,000.
In December, city council members approved 19 planning items for the centennial celebration.
Funding sources for most of the projects haven't been determined. The projects will have to go before the council again to see if there is any available money.
The answer will more than likely come during the city's budget process that must be completed in June.
Private donations are being sought.
A New Year's gala also is being planned as a fund-raiser said Marilyn Kreidler, centennial commission chairman.
Tickets are expected to cost $125. The event will be at the University of Central Oklahoma.
The gala is a fund-raiser for centennial activities.
