EDMOND - Members of the Edmond Centennial Committee want to showcase Historic Route 66 through this Oklahoma County city as part of the state's 100th birthday celebration.
Preliminary plans are to install new Historic Route 66 signs, add route markings on the highway, create a travel brochure and add red granite historical markers along the route.
The project begins at the east city limits at State Highway 66 and Hiwassee Road and goes west through Arcadia to Second Street and then south on Broadway Avenue to Memorial Park Cemetery at Broadway Avenue and Kelley.
"This is a community project on a national level," said Pete Pettry, chairman of Edmond Centennial's Route 66 subcommittee. "Edmond is considered the missing link to make Route 66 a more successful tourist attraction."
The proposed project comes with an estimated cost of $80,000.
Pettry said donations for the Route 66 project are needed.
Other plans include buying 50 brown and white Historical Route 66 signs. This is the committee's top priority.
