Miracle League pitches more fun in field of dreams

EDMOND - Sports are fun.

"Well, duh," you say. "Of course they are."

But, ask yourself, when is the last time you really had fun with sports.

All the professional leagues are so mired in money and contracts that the business of sports has nearly killed off the fun.

And college sports are often more about loyalty to your alma mater than to the pure joy of the game.

But despite all that, I tell you: Sports are fun.

And nowhere is that more evident than at the Miracle League of Edmond. Head out there tonight and see for yourself.

I made a pilgrimage last week for the season opener and let me tell you, what I saw did more to bolster my love of sports than the Super Bowl, World Series and Olympics put together.

I sat with Brett Lorton, father of 16-year-old Brian, and we watched his son run all over the field before the game, try practice swings and meet every one of his teammates and opponents -- a joy that was almost indescribable.

The Miracle League isn't competitive. The Miracle League isn't about winning or losing or keeping score.

Players bat until they hit and they all round the bases. Those on the field are happy to chase balls and make throws, even if nobody's out.

And maybe that doesn't sound like a sport to you, but you probably didn't see Brian knock one into right field on his first swing.

"He hasn't seen a bad pitch in his life," Lorton said.

One Cardinals batter who hit a home run ran off the field to talk to his mother and excitedly told a friend by cell phone that he "knocked it out of the park."

The players will be out again at 6:30 tonight at J.L. Mitch Park, on Covell Road between Kelly and Santa Fe avenues.

If you're looking to cheer or looking for someone to remind you what sports are really all about, I suggest you head out there yourself.

But bring a chair. The bleachers fill up fast.
