Have an idea what should be on Oklahoma's quarter?

Gov. Brad Henry and the Oklahoma Centennial Commission are asking for suggestions.

Ideas ultimately will be directed to the U.S. Mint by the March 31 deadline.

Oklahoma's quarter should be issued in January 2008, said Blake Wade, the Centennial Commission's executive director. However, a prototype should be unveiled during the statehood centennial activities in November 2007, Wade said.

Henry said it is appropriate on the eve of the centennial to ask residents to help "create a lasting tribute to our great state."

"We're seeking as many ideas as possible so that we will have a good range of proposals to submit to federal authorities."

Ideas must be presented in a narrative format that includes an explanation of why the design is symbolic of the state, according to federal requirements.

After the March 31 deadline, a selection team with the Centennial Commission will review and narrow the suggestions.

The Oklahoma quarter will be part of the 50 State Quarters Program, which was launched in 1999. While Oklahoma's quarter won't be in use until 2008, a postage stamp marking Oklahoma's centennial should be available in January at post offices, Wade said.
