Obama laments 'horrific outburst of violence' outburst

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is calling a mass shooting at an Army base in Texas a "horrific outburst of violence."

He says he doesn't yet know all the details but promised the government would get "answers to every single question."

The commander in chief says it's a tragedy to lose a soldier overseas and even more horrifying when they come under fire at an Army base on American soil.

Obama also said his thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and families of the fallen.

The U.S. Army says 12 people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting rampage on the Fort Hood Army base in Texas.

Authorities said immediately after the shootings that they had killed the suspected shooter, but later in the evening they recanted and said that he was alive and in stable condition at a hospital, watched by a guard.

"His death is not imminent," said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood. He offered little explanation for the mistake, other than to say there was confusion at the hospital.

A law enforcement official identified the shooting suspect as Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.

The violence was believed to be the worst mass shooting in history at a U.S. military base.

The shooting began around 1:30 p.m., when shots were fired at the base's Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening, Cone said.

It was unclear what the motive was, though it appeared he was upset about a scheduled deployment. U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said the Army major was about to deploy overseas, though it was unclear if he was headed to Iraq or Afghanistan and when he was scheduled to leave. Hutchison said she was told about the upcoming deployment by generals based at Fort Hood.

Paul,

Are you talking about the crusades? That's pretty funny. It seems to me, if I remember my history, that a majority of the crusades were against Muslims. Just a thought. Wars have been fought for many years between Muslims and Christians.

Weldon, did you denounce McVeighs religion after the OKC bombing?

If not, why not?

Randall, feel free to jump in and take a stab at those questions as well, since you seem to feel we need a "crystal night" to eliminate threats....

"And where are all the Islamic leaders flocking to the radio and television to condemn this? Not to be found."------------YOU need to look beyond the biased articles of the DOK, because on the national and world level, there's plenty of denouncement of this action.

"
Yes, Christianity has had its dark times, but it reformed."----And just what did it take for the "reform" to happen? Time, perhaps? Are you stating that time to reform should not be granted in this instance as well?

Why? Because Americans are dying? Think the the ones slaughtered in the name of Christianity thought the same way?

You are biased and a hypocrite, Weldon.

Nidal Malik Hasan, imagine that. Not Joe Smith or Mike Jones. And where are all the Islamic leaders flocking to the radio and television to condemn this? Not to be found.

Yes, Christianity has had its dark times, but it reformed. And if this person had been a "Christian", then you would see plenty of condemnation. But not from Islam...

So Paul there's your difference... Please, I keep giving you this advice, leave Oklahoma if it's so bad, man your bashing and drivel gets old...

Weldon, Edmond - Nov 6, 2009 at 8:45 am
If Christianity called for subjugation of the infidel by the sword, I'd blame Christianity. If the guy yells Allahu Akbar, is a Muslim who praises the shooter of the Little Rock recruiters and thinks more people should strap bombs to themselves, well then I blame Islam.

Hey, for all y'alls dimwits who want to blame this on his religion, how many of all y'alls would be condemning Christianity if he turned out to be a Christian?

How about if he was Southern Baptist??

Methodist??

I thought so.

Whether we admit it or not, Western Civilization is at war with the phony "religion" of Islam."-----------------------------Randall....how is Islam any more "phony" than Christianity? I believe if you compared "body counts" both in the name of Christianity and Islam you'd find strikingly similar numbers.

Stating Islam is "phony" because of killing people is also calling Christianity "phony" for the same reasons....or in your mind, is killing for Christianity ok versus killing for Islam??

Whoever commented on the first couple pages of this article about the "backwoods, mouth breathe, okie" responses is pretty much dead on.

Tell me Randall, do you choose to only look at the killings in the "name of Islam" and ignore all the killings in the "name of Christianity"??

My brother in law is the head of security at Ft. Hood. He left Ft. Hood to go to Maryland today before the shooting started. My sister in law also works there. Here's an e mail I got from her around 5:00 PM.
"Hey everyone,Just wanted to let you all know that we are fine if you have been watching the news about Fort Hood. The incident happened two miles down the road that my building is on. Adrian left for Maryland this morning but I'm still at my building since the post is locked down. No one can leave the post or the buildings and no one can come in. Just waiting for them to give us the all clear so we can go home. Ashley is safe at home. Hopefully they will decide to let us go soon."

Why did the military lie for 5 hours?
Chris, Oklahoma City - Nov 5, 2009 at 11:51 pm
Hey, so called "Truth Seeker", you only touched the surface of the fact, seemingly wanting to avoid his unbecoming behavior and comments suggesting "muslims should stand up against the agressor" among his other Anti-American statements. Care to try again?
Brock, Beaver - Nov 5, 2009 at 11:21 pm
Here's what we know so far: The shooter was born in Virginia, graduated from Virginia Tech, and is not a Muslim convert but a practicing Muslim all of his life. He was in the ROTC in college, had been active duty military for several years, was at Walter Reed for 6 years before Ft. Hood as a psychiatrist, and was promoted to the rank of Major last year. Reports are now coming out that he had never been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan but was upset that he was going to be deployed soon. He was also upset because he was being harassed by other service members (called names such as "raghead") and recently his car was vandalized and the word "Allah" was keyed onto his car. This is obviously a complicated situation and I'm certain we will learn more in the coming days. I'm not one to automatically assume that just because the shooter was Muslim that he is a terrorist or a radical, and as more information surfaces, it appears to me that the guy just snapped, lost it, etc.
Truth Seeker, Oklahoma City - Nov 5, 2009 at 11:04 pm
One has to wonder, since word has come out from associates(Col. Terry Lee) that were close to him with his work and from the branch that was investigating him 6 months earlier for the disturbing, incendiary and vile comments he made about the US and the military, was there hesitation in action because of the current mindset in the white house?
Brock, Beaver - Nov 5, 2009 at 10:54 pm
Hmm a Muslim shrink shoots and kills our citizens? What concerns me is that the government is going to lie about the whole situation. Hey I am sure there are Muslims in the Army that serve the US with dignity and honor. However, its those guys I trust, its the government I DO not trust. False flag or grooming by Hussien or what? Sorry for what happened but its likely government influenced or actually the international bankster/wall street bunch influenced. Just follow the money and you will find the truth if your a true reporter.
Terry, Norman - Nov 5, 2009 at 10:36 pm
You too, Dewayne. And I hope the same regarding the one shooter vs. terrorist attack scenarios.

Hope that someday we actually know what was going thru his mind, and really want this to be a one person situation and not some organized terrorist activity. If he actually is still alive, should definitely have a better chance of figuring it out. Hopefully by morning, we will also have consistent information on this individual. Actually get to go home, and watch the news, and hopefully get more info. BBJ, have a good night.
Dewayne, Newcastle - Nov 5, 2009 at 8:53 pm
They said that the other two were questioned and released. They were not involved. At this point they are saying there was only one person shooting.

Jason, Edmond - Nov 5, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Have they said why the other two individuals were detained? Have not really had time to search for that info.
Dewayne, Newcastle - Nov 5, 2009 at 8:31 pm
I'm aware I did neither, Dewayne. That's why I asked that you dial back the sarcasm.

Lt. Gen. Cone just announced at the press conference that the shooter is not dead. He is alive, wounded, and in stable condition.

He posted blogs on a web site saying Muslims should strike against the aggressors and kill them. He also let it be known to fellow officers. He is not a soldier, he is a TRAITOR.
Cletus, Mayberry - Nov 5, 2009 at 8:25 pm
BBJ, you did neither. Apparently they are now reporting the shooter is still alive. Am I getting bad info. I am at work, and not able to see anything on the tube.
