AC/DC electrifies 12,000 Ford Center fans

AC/DC’s “Black Ice Tour” skidded into the Ford Center Wednesday night with the unrelenting force and can’t-take-your-eyes-off-it spectacle of a massive train wreck.

Multimedia

And that’s exactly how the Australian rock gods started the show. The giant screens came to life with a bawdy animated video of a devilish Angus Young, distracted by naughty groupies, driving a runaway engine. The large-scale cartoon culminated in pyrotechnics flaring, a huge locomotive bursting through the back of the stage and the energetic rockers thundering out their latest hit “Rock N Roll Train.”

Though the venerable band surely needed no such gaudy introduction, singer Brian Johnson, guitarist Angus Young, his rhythm guitarist brother Malcolm Young, bassist Cliff Williams and drummer Phil Rudd proved from the outset their unadulterated commitment to rocking the Ford Center.

AC/DC specializes in mammoth, primal hard rock, with plenty of suggestive lyrics, intimations of violence and a wicked sense of fun. Often criticized for steadfastly adhering to its formula of huge riffs and pounding rhythms, the band’s stick-with-what-works approach was nearly impossible to argue with during Wednesday’s wildly entertaining show. Even seeing Johnson wearing his usual slouchy hat and sleeveless shirt and Angus Young in his trademark schoolboy outfit was a thrill.

The estimated 12,000 fans — there were a surprising number of empty seats for a tour that has notched numerous sell-outs — were clearly onboard. The crowd, which ranged from hollering graybeards to air-guitar-playing children, leapt to its feet as the houselights went down and stayed standing throughout the band’s two-hour set.

Like Johnson and Angus, the throng was in perpetual motion, constantly waving arms, pumping fists and banging heads. The gravel-voiced Johnson grinned maniacally as the fans took over chorus after chorus, na-nah-ing through “Thunderstruck” and shouting along to “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.”

The band drew heavily on its arsenal of colossal hits, invoking screams of delight as it hammered through favorites like “Back in Black,” “TNT” and “You Shook Me All Night Long.”

The rockers maintained their titanic intensity on new songs like “Big Jack,” “War Machine” and “Black Ice,” the title track from their successful 2008 album. Unfortunately, many fans used those less-familiar songs for bathroom breaks or beer runs, but there are no ballads at an AC/DC show, after all.

The band also tapped its 36-year-old catalog for a few deeper cuts such as “Shot Down in Flames” and “Dog Eat Dog.” The bluesy groove of “The Jack” set the mood for Angus to perform his signature strip tease, dispensing with his jacket, tie and shirt and finally flashing AC/DC boxers at the elated audience.

“The boy’s got a devil in his fingers and the blues in his soul,” Johnson quipped as Angus scorched through the song’s fiery solo.

And both have the heart of showmen and the stamina of men half their age. While the rest of the band rocked steadily in the background, Johnson and Angus made frequent trips down the catwalk jutting out from the enormous black stage. The singer strutted and incited the crowd, while the guitar slinger charmed the fans with his duck walk.

Of course, a flair for theatrics never hurt a rock band, either, and the concert was packed with extravagant and engaging set pieces (which undoubtedly played into the $100 ticket price). Johnson took a running leap and swung from the big bell suspended above the stage to open “Hells Bells.” A towering, buxom blowup doll straddled the locomotive and swayed to the beat of “Whole Lotta Rosie.”

AC/DC ended its set with “Let There Be Rock” featuring an outrageous extended solo from Angus, who wailed away like a man possessed as the platform at the end of the catwalk lifted him high above the horde. As he fell to the ground, still playing as he spun in circles, confetti exploded into the air.

As the rockers returned for their encore, the guitarist suddenly emerged from beneath the stage in plumes of red-tinged smoke for “Highway to Hell.” And when they finally closed the concert with “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You),” blasts from six canons punctuated the anthem.

The sheer spectacle and raw might of AC/DC’s show contrasted with the low-tech opening set by Northern Irish rockers The Answer. Unknown to most of the crowd, the band earned a warm but not sizzling welcome with its solid string of blues-rock songs.

The Walmarts Superstore at Penn and Memorial received a large shipment of AC/DC CDs and DVDs with great prices. Many remastered back catalog CDs are $7, some $9. The No Bull Live DVD is $7.00 and the Live at Donnington $9.75. They have the Family Jewels 2 DVDs, I forget the price, but it was a good deal. They also have the newly released Backtracks 2CDs-1DVD Box set for $26.88. Info: http://www.amazon.com/Backtracks-2CD-DVD-AC-DC/dp/B002KREVCO

Posted by Christie "I flashed Brian at the Ford Center, Brian & Angus at the Toyota Center" for David a.k.a. Dave. I got luck flashing the troop at the TC. There was an empty stagefront 1st row seat in front of us. Two songs before "The Jack" I moved down to it. Dave asked me to cool it but I couldn't let the blonde at the Ford show me up :-) Like Okie City, Houston ROCKED!

Thanks for the great AC/DC OKC post NancyKR. Yes, we had a rockin time at the Ford. The blonde behind us was well. . . "there's the cake but so many kindssss of icing". Sorry to hear about your Lupus. Hang in there and educate yourself, i.e. don't let the doctors kill you with the drugs. Great to read about your Houston gigs attendance. When I lived in Austin, I attended manyyy concerts at these venues plus Houston's 1,500 capacity Verizon Wireless Theater at Bayou Place.

Toeknee - Did u go c Aerosmith et.al Fairgrounds Aug.76?:
No, but '68-'71 I saw Jefferson Airplane twice (incredible), Grace Slick arrested after '70 OKC Civic Center gig, Janis Joplin (Good but stoned), Mountain with Leslie West and Felix Pappalardi(unbelievable!!!) and many more legends.
GF, at the time, made me go see Linda Ronstadt at the OKC Fairgrounds, think '74. LR was extremely impressive.
David, Oklahoma City - Nov 10, 2009 at 10:00 pm
Toeknee, Mark - Since I missed VH at Super Rock '78, and at Sun 8/31/80 Roklahoma, OU Stadium, I have all The Oklahoman news articles/photos from their digital archive, plus SRock '78 VH audio and copy of event poster. Actually, I have all news articles on VH OKC dates in a compressed zip file, if d/l link requested. I updated my OK/TX VH archive in Jan '08 when we attended the "Van Roth" 1/22/08 gig at the Ford Center.

Toeknee - I didn't attend the Aug 6, 1978, Super Rock '78 - The Oklahoma Jam at the OKC Fairgrounds. GF, at the time, and I worked in Estes Park, CO during the summers. I really wanted to go and see if Jim Dandy(BOA) found David Lee Roth and beat the *beep* out of him for stealing JD's stage look, LOL. The Oklahoma news review said the crowd liked JD-Black Oak Arkansas better than Van Halen. Checkout the '75 JD mag pic, OKNews pic of crowd, and event poster.

Mark, mustang Re: Your JHendrix OU recording: I have two recordings of the JH gig I attended at OU but have not listened to them in well over a decade. I need to master the best one, as many other gigs A/Vs I've attended, but have never done it. Neither were soundboard quality. It was tough to audio record in the OU Fieldhouse because of the Marshall amps signal paths bouncing all over the concrete walls. What's the quality of your audio?

Mark, I'm sure you have these but here are my links to the Jimi OU gig poster and the only Oklahoman news article on the gig. I have photos from the gig but they are on my/bros server with 18 hard-drives of rock music AV/s, photos, etc. from 1960 to current. I just moved and have not had time to unpack it and set it up.

Once 2nd row in front of Rhoads in total awe the whole gig. It really messed me up when RR died. But not as bad as when God took Stevie Ray Vaughan Aug '90 who I talked with 6 times/saw live 15 times when I lived in Austin.

MORE: When big bro and I saw VH at the Cain's Ballroom, Apr '78, we waited outside by their bus for them to come out. Finally did but we didn't get to talk with them but Diamond Dave acknowledged those waiting. I've never located the CB VH gig audio but know for a fact that Larry Schaeffer recorded it with then VH manager Noel Monk(RIP). I have some pics.

Teeknee, Meeting VH 11/20/78: Larry Schaeffer, that owned the Cain's Ballroom, promoted VH '78 OK gigs. For PR VH did a KATT radio interview then hit Sound Warehouse, May Ave/Grand Blvd, next to Will Rogers theater (now Blue 7) for signing/meet & greet. I also tried to get EVH to sign my album but crapped out due to large crowd.

none of the above. i've only been here three years. also, i was born in '68. my parents weren't the type to be taking me to shows like those. not sure of the year, but i do have a recording of vh at the fairgrounds (it may be the '78 show you mentioned).

i'm getting confused by the two Davids with no last initial.

David, Hendrix May 8, 1970 - 2nd show? i have a recording of it. let me know if you need it.

David, with the video (same, the other one?). i'd love to get a copy of your video! let me know if we can arrange something. i would have recorded the show, but i knew i would be on the end (just didn't know i'd be by the catwalk). security was by me all night. mics on my glasses would have been noticed.

Toeknee-I was also at the 11/20/78 Black Sabbath-Van Halen Myriad concert. IMO, VH blew Sabbath into the next State, LOL. I was at Sound Warehouse that afternoon, when VH was there, and got Diamond Dave to sign my "Van Halen" album. I still have it. I first saw VH 4/4/78 at the Cain's Ballroom, Tulsa when they opened for Montrose. I was blown away by those guys! We attended the "Van Roth" gig at the Ford Center on 1/22/08. $125 base per tix but worth, IMO.

Toeknee you dog. Nov.15 Metallica NYC/MSG. We would do anything to see that gig! Huge '09 World Magnetic Tour with many sold out concerts including Austin, San Antonio, Dallas. We tried for good tickets for SA and Big D but crapped out. Have a blast and pls feed back.

Here's a great pic of Angus and Ozzy mucking it up. Gosh what a couple of super-legends.

http://images.mix.com.au/2009/01/14/105165/MIXMUSIC_acdc_08-600x400.jpg

We attended the Dec 6, 2007 Ozzy concert at the Ford Center. As a very young teen, I saw Black Sabbath at the OKC Civic Center Music Hall on March 24, 1971, Paranoid Tour, during their first U.S. tour. I saw Jimi Hendrix the year before at the OU Fieldhouse. I stood 20 feet from the guy during the entire gig.
David, Oklahoma City - Nov 7, 2009 at 2:07 am
When the lights would dim between songs we loved looking at the huge arena crowd with many wearing the AC/DC flashing red horns on their heads (cost $20). Here a good pic of a girl wearing them.

As I stated, Section 114 Row C were incredible stage-right tickets. I was shocked that there were empty seats in this Section. Brian and Angus sang/played right in front of our section many times. Early in the gig Brian came over and my girlfriend flashed him. He pointed at her with a big grin. He came back for more flashing and wildness during "The Jack". A smokin blonde in Row D game him, and her boyfriend, a good show. It was shown on the stage 2 big screens.
David, Oklahoma City - Nov 7, 2009 at 2:04 am
Wow, two David, Oklahoma City - Cool. Here's what we have captured from the AC/DC OKC gig. 43 mins A+ video from my pro Sony camera, shot by my girlfriend. 112 photos from my pro Konica motor-drive camera, shot by me/and a friend on high speed film. I use film instead of digital for concert photos as it yields superior results, based on my 28 years experience. GF and I will sort through all of it on the trip to AC/DC Houston

Mark,

The guys on the right side of the stage, row J (10th row) to be exact, were me and my brother!!! We both got to slap hands with Brian Johnson, and my brother was the guy holding up the kid on his shoulders (I have my own pics on Facebook to prove all of this). Do you have camera shots or videos of us???

If anyone has any more pics of us I would love to get copies of them... my brother and I have been planning this night for YEARS! He flew in all the way from Tennessee, and it was one of the best nights we have ever had!

I also was the small-framed guy standing up on my chair (several times) going absoultely crazy, lol. Please let me know if anyone has any pics. barkerd32@yahoo.com or you can go to my Facebook profile which is open to anyone.

On the above subject, while I own many great AC/DC bootlegs the following is my recommended official AC/DC DVDs et. al. in my collection, with the VHS issue date (I own all), not the DVD date if different. Any other good ones I've missed?

Plug Me In - 3 Disc Limited Edition, 2007; Family Jewels, 2005; Stiff Upper Lip Live - Munich, 2001; No Bull Live - Madrid, 1996; Live at Donington, 1992; Audio: AC/DC Live: 2 CD Collector's Edition, 1992. Note - I'm a major Phil Rudd fan so I like AC/DC live videos from 1975-83 and 1994 to present after he rejoined the band.

Tue Nov 10, 2009 AC/DC is releasing their "Backtracks" box set through a special website only. The Deluxe Edition includes 3 CDs, 2 DVDs, 1 LP, a 164 page hard-back coffee table book and collectible merchandise reproductions all housed in an operating 1 amp AC/DC style guitar amplifier. $199 plus shipping. AC/DC's song "Nervous Shakedown" comes to mind. - Dave

ToeKnee, I/we greatly enjoy meeting and partying with other hard rockers but we are flying in Sunday and out
early Monday morning on Southwest for the Houston gig. Due to I-35 construction it is too long and fatiguing of a round-trip drive for us and then try to be productive at work on Monday.

David,I was at okc show, would seriously like 2 go 2 Houston show, don't have a way, work out a gas deal perhaps?

On good authority, AC/DC will be releasing a live DVD from their Black Ice Tour early next year. Probably will be $10 or $12 distributed via Walmarts.
David, Oklahoma City - Nov 6, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Sun, Nov 8, 2009 AC/DC Houston Concert. I just got off the phone with the Toyota Center re show tickets. They have a good selection of tickets at both $89.50 and $49.50. I was able to buy 2 in Sec 105 Row F, which are excellent stage-right similar to the OKC gig. Great facility, my 5th concert at TC. I think ticket sales are weak because AC/DC already played Houston on Dec 14, 2008. Check it out. This tour is almost over and may be their last.
David, Oklahoma City - Nov 6, 2009 at 2:29 pm

I didn't look at my watch but I think the guys hit the stage around 9:15 pm. There is an opening act named "The Answer". Hope you have a blast. Pls posted back your post-show thoughts. I have friends seeing them in Houston on Sunday night.
David, Oklahoma City - Nov 6, 2009 at 1:37 pm

David, Oklahoma City,

Or anyone else for that matter. Does anyone have any video/pics from the end of "Dog Eat Dog" when Brian Johnson pointed down & gave hi-5's to a couple of young kids? My son was one of them & I would LOVE to have a pic or video of that moment. At 9 years old, he claims that as "The Greatest Day of his Life" Awesome show, priceless memories for me and my son!
David, stillwater - Nov 6, 2009 at 9:46 am
Re Ticket Price: When I saw AC/DC in Houston on Sep 8, 2000 during the Stiff Upper Lip World Tour, 2009 inflation adjusted, the base ticket price was $64.36. But that is Houston, OKC is a more expensive concert market, and all concert tickets are much more expensive now. The last OKC Van Halen concert with David Lee Roth was $125 for good seats. I bitched but I paid it. Plus AC/DC has not played OKC since Aug 22 1996 at the Myraid and I have waited 9 years to see them tour again. Yes, worth every penny and anyone who didn't attend last night due to the price missed an incredible concert.
David, Oklahoma City - Nov 6, 2009 at 2:33 am
Brian - AC/DC mgmt is reporting to Billboard so we will know the OKC attendance soon enough. The attendance looked around 14,250 to me from Section 114 Row C, which were incredible stage-right tickets. Either way OKC attendance was excellent compared to the latest three Boxscore reported numbers for DC, Philadelphia, and New Orleans.
David, Oklahoma City - Nov 6, 2009 at 2:24 am
p.s. I paid full price for club seats and it was worth every penny. Would go again tonight. And to those who say they are 'aging' They weren't exactly pretty to start with and who cares. They have more energy than any 90's band.
brian, norman - Nov 5, 2009 at 7:28 pm
I have never seen the ford center more packed. Am I wrong? When i got to the ticket window, all they had were a few sec 303. a few minutes later they had none. I saw very few empty seats. There were very few tickets available on ebay, craigslist and very few on the street. I paid face value, that never happens. I dispute this number, I think it was a sell out.
brian, norman - Nov 5, 2009 at 7:20 pm
I know there are 12000 happy people today, and a lot of people that wish they had gone to the concert. My second time to see them with the same set list, and it was still fun. Of course I would like to hear some of there other music, but I will take what I can get in OKC on a Wednesday night with a 15 minute drive home! They are in much better shape and played a much better concert than Aerosmith this year - Brian went song after song moving around and dancing the entire stage. Angus is incredible, I wish I had half his energy!
Lawerence, Oklahoma City - Nov 5, 2009 at 5:18 pm
AC/DC was awesome! Angus and Brian did indeed rock like guys half their age. Their energy was amazing. As for some of the previous comments, everyone has their own taste in music. i don't understand how people can't like a band that i enjoy, but, to me, they're the ones missing out. try to ease up a bit.

David,
i look forward to seeing the videos you're going to upload to youtube. can you upload them to a site that will allow lossless video? i was in the third row and will upload some photos to flickr tonight. i would have recorded the show, but i was next to the stage and would have ended up getting caught, so i skipped it.

I suppose so, Britton. But don't you think Jason's post was a little over-the-top? I mean, calling a guy a sociopath (as in, Hannabal the Cannibal) because he made a joke about ACDC? So, yeah, it does bear some comment.

As for ACDC--alas, I miss Bonn Scott. For anyone who went, was Brian any good? I'll admit I do like Back in Black, Thunderstruck and a few others he sings on, but I miss Scott.
stinkerpants, Oklahoma City - Nov 5, 2009 at 1:40 pm
Hey Bob and Stinkerpants, I read on an internet message board that the reason Sam Bradford's shoulder won't heal is because of all the wrong steroids he's been taking. And then I read a fiction book from Dan Brown that I have decide now is not fiction. Oh, I also heard (somewhere I'm sure) that the Yankees don't like their new stadium and want to relocate to bricktown. Do you think you two can help get all these (probably true) rumors started?... Wasn't there suppose to be a story about AC/DC somewhere?
Britton, Edmond - Nov 5, 2009 at 12:55 pm
stinkerpants: Thanks for the info. Perhaps Jason has not returned to this site since the posing of my question. However, no response could also indicate Jason is a state rep and is avoiding a response. On the website to which you refer, some of it is relevant, i.e., the status of Jason Murphey's alma mater (online college with no demanding requirements). I found Murphey's website to read like quasi-conman listing of attributes. For those of us who have been successful businessmen and have degrees from real universities, Murphey is not impressive.

Ditto Andrew. It was great! AND with the way the stage was set up, the Ford Center was basically full, just a very few seats empty.
Terri, Oklahoma City - Nov 5, 2009 at 11:49 am
Bob, this is cross-posted from the "cougar" story:

Here's the deal--Jason was on here, flinging some pretty hard language (as you see) at people. Then a story broke from a gay group that suggested Murphey is a closeted gay guy. The information was iffy, but Murphey responded with a long diatribe that sure looked an awful lot like, gosh, the "Jason" on here. A lot. It also seemed self-incriminating. His response was taken down later. When people started digging at him on here about it, he would respond as if he thought they were the guy who had outed him. (I'm sure not that person). But it revealed him. So...several have been pointing it out. He's never denied it directly, but instead tells readers to put those people on ignore so they won't be able to read what they say. That's the deal in a nutshell. The website with the claims, which is questionable, is here: http://www.gossip-boy.com/Jason_Murphey.html . The activist who wrote it I'm told has a questionable history, and I ain't him, don't know him, and probably don't want to. But things "Jason" says are alarming.

Obviously the attendance was down because of ticket prices. You can't charge that high of prices for people up in the nose bleed sections. That would seem really unfair. I wanted to go but couldn't make it, now I'm not sure I would have paid that much for cheap seats.

Ah. Jason of Edmond (State Rep. Jason Murphey) are you saying you want people dancin' to the Devil's music? Don't you know ACDC is the "wrong element"--if anybody remembers James Watt. It's because of legislators like you that we don't have better shows more often, and why we don't get to have things like buying wine in the grocery store. Don't you have a Ten Commandments monument to go build?

Why would someone's opinion - O-P-I-N-I-O-N - that AC/DC is the "pinnacle" of musical talent make them a candidate for a psychiatrist, Davey?

I mean, I don't share that opinion, but that doesn't make "Ole" mentally ill.

You see, scumbag, here is your basic problem: you are so arrogant and self-absorbed that you honestly think that everyone who differs from you in some way in the slightest is worthy of nothing but contempt - even over the slightest, most trivial things, such as a person's favorite Rock band. That *IS* a symptom of mental illness, to wit, a Sociopath.
Jason, Edmond - Nov 5, 2009 at 8:35 am
AC/DC put on a great show as always. This is what rock and roll is all about. No talking. No ballads. No breaks. No speeches from Bishop TuTu or Amnesty International demonstrations or any of that crap that U2 thinks is part of a rock and roll show. AC/DC works hard to entertain and succeeds in a great way. I definitely got my money's worth.
Steven, Oklahoma City - Nov 5, 2009 at 8:35 am
Attendance was down because all tickets for the concert were $89.50 plus convenience charges and taxes. This really hurt attendance not having cheaper tickets for the third level.
David, Oklahoma City - Nov 5, 2009 at 8:32 am
Great review Brandy! We were three rows from the concert stage and AC/DC was incredible. The guys thundered the whole gig! Sounds like a hell of a show. Wonder how they only sell 12,000 and U2 sells 60,000. Maybe the tickets were too high, because as far as rock and roll goes, ACDC is at the pinnacle. Like a Metallica who does not starve for the spotlight. Sounds like Bon Scott would have approved. A really nice set. I personally would like to hear Sin City, Shake a Leg, Girls got rhythm and Giving the dog a bone. Hopefully there will be another chance to see them. Maybe in Tulsa's BOK center.
