DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Two speeding buses have collided head-on on a highway in central Bangladesh, killing at least nine people and injuring 58 others.

Police officer Habibullah Sarker said the accident occurred Monday near Tangail town, 45 miles (72 kilometers) north of the capital Dhaka.

Sarker said five people including an infant were killed at the scene. Four passengers died from their injuries on the way to nearby hospitals, where 58 others are being treated.

Fatal road accidents blamed on dangerous driving and faulty vehicles claim at least 4,500 lives a year in Bangladesh, according to government estimates.
