SAND SPRINGS (AP) — A Sand Springs woman recently called Maytag Appliances about repairing a door latch on her mother's clothes dryer.

Now the set is headed to the Maytag Museum.

The pink laundry set is 52-years-old — having been bought in 1957 by Torchy Wolfe as a Mother's Day present for her mother, Jane Thompson.

Wolfe says the set still works like new and except for the door latch there has never been a problem.

When Maytag learned about the set the company offered Thompson a new washer and dryer in exchange. But the old set works so well that Thompson took three weeks before deciding to accept the offer with a condition — if the new ones don't work as well she wants the old set back.

Maytag plans to display the 1957 set at its museum in Benton Harbor, Mich.

OMG! I had a Vega as well. Well, in 75 I made a lot of stupid decisions. The Vega wasn't the only one. (see horse-sex article)

Not everything is so good about the old days...as late as 1975 I bought my first brand new car...a shiny new Vega...boy was I ever dissapointed... the car was a basket case at 5 thousand miles and when you turned on the air it reduced engine power by 20-25 %.
I have never owned a GM car since...And now that the government controls it, I am sure the cars will be of an even poorer quality.
So my guess Kevin is that the President will be blamed for this as GM cars are becoming known as Obama-Mobiles.

Back then things were made in the United States of America, now they are made everywhere but. During those times quality and manufacturing were inseperable, when manufacturing started to be exported quality stayed in America, people overseas just don't seem to have the same concerns for the American consumer, no pride like it was 52 years ago. There's still pride in America, just no place to put it to work. Carl, Abilene - Oct 22, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Ahhh, the joys of globalization. The times sure have changed. I believe in the past companies actually cared about putting out a quality product for their customers. You could work 40 years, get your golden watch, and then retire and live comfortably off your pension for the rest of your days.

I think that most companies now have been taken over by the corporate raiders who only care about bleeding the company dry from the top. They'll outsource as much of the production as they can to countries that pay their workers slave wages. They'll put out a subpar product because they know that they can turn a few extra dollars if that product only lasts X number of years.

According to the standards we have today, you'd be a complete fool to make a washer and dryer that last 52 years.

Louis Friend, Norman - Oct 22, 2009 at 1:04 pm
I would have kept the old set or taken the new set with a lifetime warranty on ALL of the parts.
Nicole, Oklahoma City - Oct 22, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Just curious--could this be blamed on Obama?
Kevin, Oklahoma City - Oct 22, 2009 at 12:36 pm
They don't make them like they used to.

HAHA! Cale....true....very very true! I'm only 30 & even I realize this now. If it wasn't broken, why replace it? Why give them something very usable & long-lasting for something of less quality. She made a mistake & needs to get the old ones back! Why let something so great sit unused in a museum? Pink's cute too!!!

I just got rid of my 32 year old Harvest Gold Maytags. Never had a problem with the washer, and replaced the dryer timer once. They just don't make 'em like they used to. But my new front loaders use a lot less water and the washer spins the clothes so much drier that the dryer takes half the time it used to.

Everything is "disposable" now. Companies manufacture appliances and electronics to break down after so long. Most are made cheap with plastic parts and have so many bells and whistles that if something does break it costs so much to fix... you might as well buy a new one. I'm not that old but, growing up in a small town, we had a old man in town with a shop and he fixed T.V.s and appliances... did it for years. I bet he's closed down now.

The Washer/Dryer set was made back in the good ole days when a company and craftsmen took pride in what they produced. You are lucky now days if you can get a free one year warranty on appliances.
